Join us for a free community virtual screening in celebration of Ecology Action’s Bike Month, followed by a live panel discussion and Q&A with MOTHERLOAD director Liz Canning and local (cargo) bike luminaries.

MOTHERLOAD is an award-winning crowdsourced documentary about a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of the digital age, its planetary impact, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote.

Panel:
Liz Canning, filmmaker: Liz cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Hauling babies via car was not only unsustainable but took the freedom and adventure out of life, and Liz felt trapped. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born.
Amelia Conlen, moderator: Amelia is a planner with Ecology Action, focusing on Safe Routes to Schools and Active Transportation planning. Prior to Ecology Action, Amelia was the Executive Director of Bike Santa Cruz County, where she worked for better bike infrastructure throughout the county.
Special guest: Justin Cummings, Mayor of Santa Cruz: Justin is originally from the South Side of Chicago. In 2007 he moved to Santa Cruz to pursue a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the UCSC. After finishing his Ph.D. in 2013, he spent two years as a post-doc studying climate change in the Everglades at Florida International University. In 2015 Justin moved back to Santa Cruz to serve as the founding director of the UCSC Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program. In 2018 Justin joined the Santa Cruz City Council and is currently an environmental sensor technician and drone operator, and the Mayor for the City of Santa Cruz.
