Dear friend,
California towns and cities allocate an outsize portion of their civic space to cars: car storage (parking), roads, and freeways.
- In Los Angeles, the space devoted to parking cars alone is bigger than the island of Manhattan. That’s enough space to build 1 million units of housing.
- The cost to build car parking is more than $24,000 per spot in Los Angeles and almost $28,000 in San Francisco.
The Bike Parking Bill, AB 3153 (Rivas), gives California a change to lower the minimum number of car parking spaces required in new buildings. This will make housing more affordable and our cities more livable.
