Good morning,
Last month (May 7) I attended a monthly meeting of the “Eat Well Play Hard” Network, a community partnership (some involved agencies include: American Heart Association, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Food Bank of CNY, NYS Dept of Health, Onondaga County Dept of Health, OC Dept of Aging and Youth, Onondaga County Parks, OCM Boces, PEACE, Inc., Syracuse Parks/Rec Dept, SU, Syracuse City Schools, etc.) dedicated to improving the health of children in Onondaga County by reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
The group is looking to increase walkability/bikeability in the City of Syracuse (concept to be used for commuter and recreational purposes). EWPH aims to function as an advisor, promoter/advocate for this initiative. The group has discussed several potential projects, including the possibility of replicating Parkway Sundays in the City (utilize Salina St, James St), discussing the potential for converting existing roadways to ped-only users, and seeking opportunities to tie in with other projects (Connective Corridor, Safe Routes to School, Civic Strip, Downtown Living Tour, etc.).
To that end, they are looking to identify other key stakeholders/contacts in the City that can assist with some or portions of the potential projects (noted above). I thought that Pete or Jeff might be able to let the group know what role the City DPW could perhaps play or where to tell them to start as far as making connections at the City goes to begin working on one or more of these ideas (Chris Abbott from Syracuse Parks is already part of this committee).
The next meeting of the group is this Thursday, June 4th from 3-4pm at the WIC office (375 West Onondaga Street). I apologize for the late notice. If you can attend, that’d be great; if not, if you have some ideas for these folks, I’d be happy to pass them along. The group holds monthly meetings (the July meeting will be held July 9th – location TBD).
Don – they are also looking for local advocates and would appreciate hearing from you and/or other Bike CNY members.
Attached are the minutes and handouts from the May meeting that I attended. I’ll follow up with a phone call to Pete. Other than that, any questions, just give me a call.
Thanks,
Danielle, SMTC
