Here is the information on the new rumble stripes which ODOT is installing
on the edgelines of Ohio's rural state roadways, and a map showing the locations
of the first 1,300+ miles of rumble stripes which they will install during
the next two years. Contact Scott Varner at scott....@dot.state.oh.us with your concerns, including roadways which should not receive the rumble striping treatment. - Chuck Smith, Ohio Bicycle Federation

Cincinnati Bicycle Commuters,

You may know that ODOT has launched a project to install rumble
stripes on over 1,300 miles of Ohio's rural two-lane roadways. You
may have see some of these on area roadways already. I sent you links
to a map of the planned project and ODOT's fact sheet on the project.

If you are concerned about this project, please contact Scott Varner
of ODOT at scott....@dot.state.oh.us.

We need your help in identifying Ohio bike tours with 1,000 or more
riders. ODOT has agreed not to install rumble stripes on these routes.
Our job is to identify the tours and provide maps to ODOT. So far, we
have identified GOBA (different route each year), TOSRV, Hancock
Horizontal 100, Sweet Corn Challenge, Sunday in June, Pelotonia, and
Bike MS: Pedal to the Point. Are you aware of any others? If so,
please contact me at ch...@ohiobike.org. Go to our web site at www.ohiobike.org
for the latest ODOT map of 1,300+ miles of Ohio state roadways slated
for rumble striping and the latest ODOT rumble striping fact sheet.

In rumble striping, ODOT is grinding 6 inch grooves across the edge
lines of two-lane Ohio state roadways in rural areas, many of which we
ride.

If you are concerned about ODOT rumble striping roadways which we
ride, please email Scott Varner of ODOT at
scott....@dot.state.ohio.us.

What about routes that are used by organized rides and get over a thousand
riders on that route in a year's time? The Cincinnati Cycle Club Saturday
Breakfast ride goes nearly every week (weather and certain special rides can
cancel/supersede it) Sometimes 60+ riders, usually 30-40.
And there are weekly rides that are bigger than that, I believe.

Why just the massive one time rides?

Larry,

You raise a good question.

We can certainly make ODOT aware of our concerns and of the importance
of other, shorter ride routes.

Please contact Scott Varner of ODOT at Scott....@dot.state.oh.us to
express your concerns. Scott is counting the number of emails from
cyclists to gauge cyclist concern regarding the rumble stripes, so
every email sent will have an impact!

Thanks,

Chuck

You may have heard of the Cleveland area cyclist who was injured recently hitting a rumble stripe.  We in the Ohio Bicycle Federation are working with ODOT on this issue.  So far, ODOT plans to install a warning sign.  We suggest to them that it is far better for ODOT not to create a hazard (rumble stripe) rather than creating a hazard then warning us about it.

We will keep in touch,

- Chuck
