Once past Plainfield and up to Reed Hartman, the bike lane has been
removed and in its place they are building an 8 ft wide sidewalk. The
space for a cyclist on the road is gone. Is Blue Ash expecting
cyclists to use the sidewalk between Plainfield and Reed Hartman? It's
only a block or 2 so it's not a big deal to me. I was just wondering.

Trust me, Mister T, you don't wanna take Reed Hartman on a bike. The
area you're talking about is where the speed limit kicks up from 25 to
40 mph, and the drivers know it. What I do is take the sidewalk along
Plainfield until it meets up with the bike trail north of Cooper.
That's a very nice ride and will get you up to Glendale-Milford, where
the trail extends east to get back to Reed Hartman.

If you need to go further north than that, I recommend taking the
extended sidewalk on Kenwood Rd, which will get you up to Cornell.
Blue Ash just ain't built for bikes on the road... and they get real
antsy about riding on Reed Hartman.

It's actually against the law to cycle on RHH. I know this because I had a very embarrassing dispute with an irate driver who told me (in not-so-nice terms) to get off the road. I responded in less than nice terms, then saw the no cycling sign 1/4 mile further down the road! Oops!

Any road called a 'highway' means it's not legal to cycle on it!

That said, I think Mr T already knows this...

I would debate that to find what the law enacted in 2006 would classify Reed Hartman as. Is it limited access? Perhaps our local bike lawyer, Steve Magas can shed some light on this?

Mr C. is correct. It's illegal to be on RHH. Aside from that, I'm on the road. No sidewalks for me--even through Blue Ash and I avoid the bike lanes when possible. My post was rather to point out the lack of thinking by Blue Ash by installing and (seemingly) expecting the cyclists to ride on the sidewalk. Now the drivers will expect the same and the yelling/honking will begin when I refuse to use the sideWALK. It's only for a block or two though...

Although I agree with with TM's sentiments, the problem I have biking
in Blue Ash is the same throughout the burbs - too few access roads
for the number of cars. So as much as I hate using the sidewalks, I do
anyway, because between the construction and the traffic, it's ucky.
Thankfully, the "enlarged sidewalks" do have a bike trail designation.
Didn't help me last time I got hit by a car when I passed an
intersection...

Interestingly enough, there's a similar "no bikes" designation for
Columbia Parkway and River Road going out of downtown Cincy - and I've
ridden on both. :) The people on RHH tend to be more anal and so are
the cops. I've seen a cop pull over next to a pedestrian on that road
and chew him out. :D

Marcus, I urge you to use the street as much as you can. Using the
sidewalk only reinforces the idea that bikes should not be on the road
and this can have a negative impact on other cyclists. Motorists need
to be educated that we have the same rights to the road as they do and
the best way to do this is to get on the road.
