Burbank Farm’s Open House, April 26 & 27th
Special Activities for Children
Bees! Worms! Making Rope! Making Seeds!
There will be many activities that will be of special delight to children at Luther Burbank’s Experiment Farm Open House on April 26 & 27, from 10 AM to 4PM at 7777 Bodega Ave., Sebastopol. Schedule: www.wschsgrf.org
What youngster doesn’t enjoy watching bees in a demonstration hive? Not to worry about stings – our buzzing honey-makers are sealed behind glass. See them busily build comb, and feed their babies. Mom and Dad can even buy plants whose flowers are especially nutritious and attractive to bees.
Wiggly, sqiggly, pink worms tickle your hands. What a great pet! No costs for food, no vet bills, no daily care. A kid can keep a worm bin with a little help from an elder every now and then. Just feed them kitchen scraps for them to make compost, and then harvest them and put them in the garden where they keep the soil aerated to help the garden thrive.
Turn the handle on the gadget and take away a piece of rope you made yourself! Here’s a simple lesson in mechanical engineering that can inspire a kid who loves to tinker and build things. They may even be encouraged to build a better mousetrap!
Pre-teens on up will be fascinated to learn just how Luther Burbank improved the food supply and beauty of flowers by developing new varieties of plants. With an easy, hands-on, introductory lesson in hybridizing, you’ll find out how honey bees pollinate flowers, and how Burbank refined the process to encourage plants to improve themselves the way he wanted: bigger, more productive, more beautiful.
A fresh apple fritter will be a yummy mid-morning snack, made right before your eyes. Of course the nursery will offer an enticing assortment of flowers, vegetables and perennials for the home landscape.
