On Monday evening, 1/13, from 6:00 -9:00 at the Youth Annex the City Council will be meeting with the Core Project to talk about the findings of the SDAT study last May and to discuss the next steps for action. Among numerous recommendations is one to improve pedestrian connections in town, specifically routes to our parks (downtown to the Laguna; downtown to Ives Park; downtown to Ragle Ranch).

This is part of a Park Once and Walk initiative that might eventually include a mobile app and interactive directory of town businesses and fun destinations. While this will be very helpful for visitors,  a surprising number of locals do not realize how close-by our resources are.

If you are interested in promoting a "Park Once and Walk" initiative to reduce traffic, promote walking, and encourage visitation to our nearby nature, the Core folks will be talking about a pilot/feasibility study project being proposed in conjunction with Cittaslow Sebastopol.

The focus is on finding ways to take action and foster innovation.

I've attached a sample of the Sebastopol Ped Line concept. Don't focus on the actual routes. This is just a playful pictorial image of the possibilities.

Would love to know if any of you are interested in working more on this. We're putting together a Task Force that will meet next on Thursday evening, 1/23.

Hi,
What time and where will the meeting be on the 23rd? Also, what does "Cittaslow" mean? Thanks.
Tricia

Here's the info that I have.  See flier below.  There is a little information about Cittaslow on the right sidebar.  Hopefully Tasha will write in with more info.  Is there a website for Cittaslow Sebatopol?

Eco-Tourism Initiative:
Pedestrian Connectors to our Parks
Thursday 1/23, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Please reply to RSVP

City Hall Conference Room (back of building)
7120 Bodega Ave. Sebastopol

Dear Larkin,

Happy New Year! Thank you for your expressed interest in Eco-Tourism in Sebastopol.

It's time to take the next step!

The suggestion that received the most votes at the Eco-Tourism Open House was to improve pedestrian connectors to our parks:
  • The Plaza to the Laguna
  • The Plaza to Ives Park
  • The Plaza to Ragle Ranch
Where this might lead...

Pedestrian connectors mean different things to different people. One possibility:

Imagine a "Park Once and Take the Ped Line" campaign as a way to promote a more walkable Sebasotpol. Good for the town, good for the waistline, good for the planet!

Please reply to let us know if you will be joining us 1/23.

Interest remains high in a more walkable Sebastopol because pedestrian connectors:
  • Benefit locals and visitors
  • Reduce traffic by promoting a "Park Once and Walk" approach
  • Get people out, walking and connecting (with town and each other)
  • Improve commerce (purchases rise when people are on foot)
  • Expand enjoyment of our nearby nature

Folks from several pedestrian-oriented groups in town will be attending this meeting to seek ways to work together to make pedestrian connectors a viable part of an eco-friendly Sebastopol.

We look forward to seeing you on the 23rd!

P.S. Monday 1/13 from 6:00 - 9:00 at the Youth Annex is a study session with the City Council to discuss ways to get moving on the SDAT recommendations. And then 1/28, Cittaslow Sebastopol will be presenting to the Planning Commission about the Eco-Tourism Report and Pedestrian Connectors. Things are starting to move. You can be in on the ground floor!

"Cittaslow has taken all of the ideas that have been floating around our community for a long time, and actually is getting them to finally move in the same direction, which is a lot like herding cats. That's a real service to our community. Thank you!"

We are in the process of potentially moving the meeting as it appears there may be more people attending than we had anticipated. This is a good "problem" to have! Nice to see such interest in an action-oriented Task Force.

The meeting will be in downtown Sebastopol. We're needing to get an accurate head count so we can be sure we have enough space, tables, chairs, etc.

Please RSVP if you are planning to attend: ta...@cittaslowsebastopol.org. The meeting will be held Thursday 1/23 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. When I know the exact room, I'll send out an update to those who have indicated an interest.

As for "Cittaslow," it means "Slow City" in Italian. In 2010, Sebastopol joined the Slow City movement which got it's start in Italy. There are over 170 Cittaslow towns in 26 countries around the world. Cittaslow Sebastopol is an ad hoc volunteer committee which the Sebastopol City Council has tasked with identifying opportunities to help our town thrive within these 6 "Slow City" priorities:
• Support locally made products and agriculture
• Celebrate our history and culture
• Welcome visitors and embrace neighbors
• Integrate technologies for improved well-being
• Protect the health of the environment
• Develop community-friendly infrastructure (walk ways, bike paths, open space and parks)

Cittaslow Sebastopol serves as "conveners" so individuals, businesses, non-profits and governmental agencies can collaborate to bring "slow" projects or events to fruition. We contribute some technology and project management skills, as well as understanding of city processes, to help focus energy on an action-path. Amazing how much more can get done when we all row in the same direction!   :-)

I did send a reply, but somehow it hasn't posted yet. Darn!

We're delighted to have anyone who would like to come and is ready to work on an action plan. Can you RSVP, though, ASAP so we'll know how many are planning to attend? We may need to make a room adjustment was there seem to be more people than we had anticipated. (Nice "problem" to have!)

Cittaslow Sebastopol's website is cittaslowsebastopol.org. You can get a sense of us by our Facebook page also. Plus we'll describe more about the organization at the meeting.   :-)
