May is annual bike-to-work month. That's also bike-to-work week May
11th-15th, and bike-to-work day is May 15th.

I'd like see some kind of bike-to-work day action here this year, but
this season we'll need volunteers other than myself to lead the
effort. the Indiana Bicycle Coalition has offered to supplied some
free pins and t-shirts to support the effort if we get something
organized. I could handle that part.

Part of the effort could be simply promoting the day around town and
around your workplace. I'm sure there are ready-made posters to be
found online for this.

Other places set up refreshment stands on key routes into downtown,
and provide cyclists free food and drink on their way in. It might
also be possible get some place like Tom's, Readmore, or the Warehouse
Cafe to provide some kind of discount to cyclists on this day.

Even if it doesn't feel like there's much time to organize, we can
choose to do something at a scale that is achievable.

I'd offer a $10 coupon for my services (acupuncture) to everyone biking
to work at least once in May. Now to come up with coupons and a
poster. And, for people scared or uninterested in acupuncture, maybe
the massage therapists I work with would also participate.

I'm in as well. I will design some flyers/posters . If there are some "official" logos  email me some and I will incorporate them. I will also promote at Earlham, Most of my department bikes to work nearly all the time.

Here's one kind of official design I have found:

http://www.ebbc.org/?q=en/btwdvolunteer

I have asked a couple of the larger, more organized bike coast groups if
we could have their source graphic files, or even just mail us some
poster.

I also noticed that nationally groups can't decide whether
bike-to-work-day should be on the 14th (a Thursday) or the 15th (a
Friday).

It looks like it has been on the third Thursday as far back as I can find. I will come up with a poster and some flyer designs by the end of this week . I will have some flyers for everyone at Critical Mass.

Cycling and Fitness Warehouse is totally in. Initial conversations
yielded place, promotional items and advertising. I will post more as
plans become more firm.

I could ask some downtown places if they would give 10% off if people
arrive by bike on that day ( Readmore, Tom's, the Yarn Shop ). That could
be an extra fun incentive.

Great. Tom's New York Deli just committed to offering a free large drink on
that day, with the purchase of a specialty sandwich (if you ride your bike in).

I expect to hear back from Readmore tomorrow.

Jason,

I'd love to distribute some around Earlham.  Just get in touch with me either by email or phone 962-3922 and we can arrange something.

At some point it would be great if a list could be made to show who all is participating.  I know this is where I'm should offer to organize that, but does anyone else feel like tackling that?

I've started a page to track the incentives for Bike To Work Day 2009
here:
http://groups.google.com/group/bike-richmond/web/bike-to-work-day-2009

I think any member of the google group can edit the pages. If you want
to update the page and for some reason you can't, I can help provide
that access, or make the updates on your behalf.

Thanks for working on this Jason.

Just to add another option, here's a logo/poster design that I asked for permission to use earlier this week:

http://www.sfbike.org/?btwd

I see that multiple groups are using these "shadow cyclists" graphics, so I
expect we can get the rights to them as well. They are also using the date of
the 14th, which I think we could change in the design. I hope to hear back in
the next few days about this alternative.

This looks like a great way to raise public awareness of bicycling.  "...adventures of bike commuting." is a good way to describe it.  I wish Dave Snow safety and the best experiences with this endeavor.  Thanks to CFW for their part too.

This is fanastic news. Thanks for helping organize this Stephen!

I hope his loaner bike includes all the details that make bike commuting
pleasant for me: a mirror, a bell, a rack, and a decent bag to attach to it.
I'm sure Stephen and the CFW will do a good job outfitting him.

I just reflect that a lot of times attempts at regular bike commuting are
under-funded. People want cycling to replace their car, but will often spend
only a fraction of what they spend on their car before they give it up.

I calculated that I'm saving $200 to $300 / month by not having a second car in
my family, factoring in all car expenses. So, that's in the range of
$3,000/year. Looking at those real numbers, it's clear that when you use a
cycling to replace a car, there's plenty of wiggle room to fund the project and
still save money. Investing in rain gear, trailers, and even second and third
bikes are all possibilities.

It won't be long until I'm coming up on a decade since I sold my car, and there
hasn't been a day I regretted it.

All great points Mark.  Dave came in yesterday and picked out his bike and equipment.  He has never commuted before, so he is a novice.  The equipment is safe, but not as comprehensive as yours and mine.  Instead of giving him the "whole" of my experience, he will have the opportunity to learn first hand why, fenders, mirrors and bright colored clothing are valuable features (which were and will be available to him throughout this event).  I feel his daily reporting and the evolution of his equipment will help educate and build value of equipment that you and so many others now have.
