Can someone tell me why you chose to have the day, week and month be
in June rather than following the LAB's national May times?
Obviously, we don't have to slavishly follow LAB's suggestion, it has
to be confusing for cyclists and the general public to have two
different dates, provided they even know about the event.
In our meeting, we didn't decide where to follow LAB or Bike Michiana.
Seems to me it would really be helpful to all be on the same date.

The only reason for pushing BTW back to June was the weather. It was a
controversial decision, because we wanted to keep consistent with the
rest of the US, but we felt we would get better participation if we
delayed the event a few days. There is no question that participation
increased due to the later date.
Having said that, BTW week in 2010 will be May 23 - 28.
The reason for moving the date into May is a bit complex, and has
almost nothing to do with either the weather or National Bike Month.
We are working to hold the largest cycling event ever in Michiana,
called Bike The Bend. It will be patterned after Chicago's Bike The
Drive. The route will be 30 miles in St. Joseph county, South Bend,
Mishawaka and Notre Dame. Streets will be closed to motor vehicles. It
is a joint effort of Bike Michiana along with several civic and
government groups. May 23 was the best day, in terms of getting police
manpower to close the streets and direct traffic.
To make a long story a bit shorter, Bike The Bend will be May 23, and
will be the kickoff for Bike Michiana's Bike to Work Week.
