Hi Bike Michiana listserv,
I'm new to South Bend, and am looking for advice.
1) Are there any group rides you would recommend for me? I'm more of a commuter cyclist than anything else, and am looking for a way to meet other cyclists and learn good routes around town. There used to be a Monday night ride that seemed to fit the bill that MBA did, but I'm not sure that's going on right now. I have a commuter hybrid bike, and could probably keep up for a distance of 15-20 miles, at a fairly slow pace (but would prefer something shorter and more social in nature).
2) Are there any bicycle advocacy volunteer opportunities? How does one get involved with the Bike Michiana Coalition? (I'm from Atlanta, and used to volunteer for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition.)
Any advice welcome!

Hi Sara, I myself had the same question as I've moved back to the area
this year.
Bike the Bend was my first event and on their page are links to other
cycling events and groups.

Tuesdays there is usually a group ride. Today's ride is at the
Buchanan Riverfront Part and the Ride starts at 6:30pm

Sarah & Gabriel.

Welcome (or welcome back) to Michiana.

I think you will like cycling in the area...not as great as Portland
or Europe, but good by American standards.

1. Group rides: go to BikeMichiana.org. Click on "Local Cycling
Calendar" at the top of the left side. This lists most of the popular
local rides. You're right...the MBA 'beginner rides' on Monday nights
are finished for the year. Let me suggest you try the Outpost ride on
Tuesday evenings: it sounds like you may fit the 'Class A' very
nicely.

2. Volunteer opportunities: your timing is good. Pete Jank is the
volunteer coordinator for Bike Michiana for Hospice
http://www.bikemichianaforhospice.org/. BM for H is a fund raiser for
both Hospice and the Bike Michiana Coalition (BMC). Pete is still
looking for help. The ride is unique in that the SAGS are run totally
by local restaurants, and they informally compete for rider
compliments. The food really really is GOOD! Contact Pete by email at
jan...@gmx.de
