Scratchy sound on Linux/Winex Counter-Strike

My Counter-Strike's sound is not working right--its scratchy and
muffled.

It's installed using Winex 2.2, on my Mandrake 9.0 system. Monster
Sound soundcard. Sound works normally outside Winex, and in other
Winex games (Warcraft III).

Here's what I did so far:

- I turned off the sound server

- I set _snd_mixahead to "0.23"

- I turned all "voice" line values to "0"

No joy.

Again, I can hear muffled, scratchy sound. But nothing else.

I can't find a word about this problem posted anywhere. Anyone?
