I am building a brandnew RedHat Linux Server and connecting it my broadband
cable account (Bigpond Australia). I am having a surprising amount of
difficulty so would be really greatful for some pointers. I am a total
Linux newbie so forgive me if stupidity seems rampant.
Problem is every time system starts it pauses on "bringing up eth0 - failed"
I have installed fresh Redhat 7.2.
During setup I selected the default option for medium firewall capabilities
but also selected eth0, news and www as trusted.
I have tried 4 different network cards so I dont think they are the problem.
2 Realtek, 1 Intel, 1 3com. Kudzu detects and installs them all without
issue.
I have confirmed that DHCP is enabled under linuxconf.
Network Configuration - TCP/IP settings has "Automatically obtain IP address
with - DHCP" selected.
Have also tried selecting "Automatically obtain DNS information from
provider" under the Hostname tab but have not entered a host name as not
sure what to enter.
ifconfig seems to work fine but I'm not sure what the posted results mean.
ifup eth0 fails and gives me the same FAILED message as the startup
sequence.
ftp dce-server also fails and says "Temporary failure of name resolution"
I can't understand why my system wont lease an IP number. Is there another
setting I need to change.
I intend to install an application called BPAlogin which will help me log
onto my cable account but I seem to be having some fundmental issues that
need resolving first.
Oh yes, the network cable is plugged in and lights up as does the hub which
is connected to the cable modem and allows my Windows 98 and 2000 machines
to connect to the internet via cable modem.
Looking for clues.
Regards and thanks
Sean
