Yeah, both Clark and Smith are good at what they do, and a lot easier
for non-tech people to administer.
As a general rule though, Clark is slightly more complete (includes
Snort IDS, for example) but requires more knowledge on the part of the
administrator. If you want a server/gateway for yourself, but don't want
to have to put an effort into administering it, Clark's the go.
On the other hand, E-Smith is very close in features to Clark, but is
easier for a person who doesn't know anything about unix to run. This
one's best suited to third-party systems where someone with tech skills
does the initial setup, then the non-tech locals look after their part
of the system (adding logins, ibays etc) via user-manager. They never
need to get their hands dirty.

Linux use at the desktop is growing rapidly, according to IDC (Source:
IDC Bulletin - Worldwide Linux Operating Environment Forecast,
2002-2006: Client Shipments Pick Up Pace). IDC cites growth in use of
the Linux client in 2001 at 107%, more than four times the growth of the
previous year. IDC further projects continued growth of the Linux client
at a compounded annual rate of 30.1% through 2006.
I prefer to have my firewall separate, so a smoothwall distro on a 486
box would work fine, and either e-smith or clarkconnect behind the
firewall for shareing things would be preferred, IMHO.

The only thing i would point out is that the stable versions of
smoothwall (1.0 and below) are based on the Linux 2.2 kernel, which has
inferior firewalling capabilities to the 2.4 kernel.
Because Shoreline Firewall (http://shorewall.sf.net) is such a great
product, i find it hard to use anything else for my routers. :-)
