Hello all you PPPoE DSL hungry people!
I'm so happy i could do the highland fling! I just made a major
breakthrough that perhaps some of you may be suffering from when you
say you Can't Connect. Do you receive a message like this in your
syslog file (do a tail -f /var/log/messages):
pppd[983]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
pppd[983]: Connection terminated.
pppoe[984]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
pppd[983]: Exit.
Okay, my problem was that my modem wasn't configured properly. Now
that it's working i feel so dumb because its really very simple to
setup PPPoE.
First of all, you need to set up your Modem so that it is Bridging
your ADSL connection, not PPTP! I'm using an Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro,
but this can be used on the Home version too, just note that there is
no PPP support on the Home version.
I copied the information that was in the phonebook (pre-configured by
my Service Provider for PPP) to a bit of paper (VERY IMPORTANT :o) ),
just make sure you get the VCI and VPI numbers. I then deleted there
entry for PPP and added a new one to specify 'Bridge' in the type
field. Then i clicked on the Bridge button and added my new bridge
configuration with the ENC field set for LLC/SNAP; then i selected
'forwarding' inside 'State'. Then clicked Apply, then Save All.
Now, here's the hard part. Go to your linux box and type adsl-config,
set up your adsl connection, then type adsl-start. All going well, you
should see a much anticipated message that says: "Connected!"
I hope this helps you all!
Kind Regards,
Adam.
hello Adam,
i'm trying to get a speedtouch USB modem to connect to BTopenworld (I'm
in London, ex-Bris), all sorts of fun and games.
you note that "there is no ppp support on the home version"
I suspect I've got a home version, what do you mean by this statement?
cheers, Neil
