I recently subscribed to a Bigpond ADSL plan and received a
self-install kit with a Thomson/Alcatel speedtouch modem. It installed
with no problems using Win2K. Configuring it when booting into Linux
took more time. All attempts to get it working with rp-pppoe-3.5
failed (although the compilation and install went fine). Adsl-start
would simply timeout. Adsl-status revealing that while a link was
established to PPP0, PPP0 was down.
Oddly, after many unsuccessful attempts to get ppoe working (although
adsl-setup proceeded okay), and with a variety of adjustments to the
"neat" network configuration tool - my system suddenly connected to
the internet without the use adsl-start. How can this be? Clearly
something is performing the CHAP authorisation (see below), but what's
doing it if not adsl-start? In addition, after running the last
adsl-setup routine, I deleted the PPP0 entry in the network
configuration using neat.
Would be grateful if someone could tell me how this is connecting, as
I eventually be setting some servers on this machine and would like to
understand the networking setup.
My ifconfig printout is as follows:
[root@mother root]# ifconfig

If i log in to the modem with http://10.0.0.138 (after first
restarting the modem I get this from its system log (most recent

Looking at neat's entry for eth0, it has the following settings:
Under the "general" tab of the "device" edit for eth0: 1) set to
activate when computer starts 2) automatically obtain IP settings with
DHCP 3) automatically obtain DNS information from provider
Under the Device tab: 1) hostname set to "mother" 2) Primary DNS set
to 10.0.0.138 3) DNS search path to vic.bigpond.net.au
Hope someone can shed light on this. (note the only other thing i did
in attempting to connect was to compile pptp. I didn't however install
it. This was the last thing I did before the system suddenly connected
to the web - which is why I mention it).
Cheers, Iain
