Subject: Crystal Palace Crits - Update
Hi everyone,
I thought I should update you all on how things have gone this year with the Crystal Palace Crits series and share our plans for 2018.
Before I do though, can I extend a sincere thank you to you all for your support and that of your members for the season just closed. The marshalling aspects that you all help us cover have been the best resourced that I can remember. Please pass on my thanks to all your members who came along and helped.
The 2017 series has been a challenge for us on a number of fronts. BC produced a new Risk Assessment which we have been obliged to follow. The headline items from this are that we are limited to 80 riders on the circuit (before it was 100) and we have to pad all the park furniture (necessitating renting a van and purchase of pads). Having kept the entry fee at £10 despite increased costs and a reduction on numbers has resulted in us making a loss of around £2,500 on the series this year. Luckily, the outlay on the pads could be funded from grant money we held from BC. A summary account is at the end of this email.
Naturally, we can’t sustain a loss like this year on year, so at our de-brief last month, we agreed to raise the entry fee for advance entries from £10 to £13 (plus the RiderHQ transaction fee). Entries on the day we would like to keep at £15 for now. For youths, we are considering raising the entry from £3 to £5 but would welcome views on whether this is affordable for kids and parents.
We will also take steps to reduce costs, reviewing first aid provision and van rental. The latter is a special challenge in other ways, as the logistics of picking it up, loading, rigging, de-rigging, unloading and returning are a considerable effort. We have approached BC to ask if funding could be made available to purchase a van dedicated to storing and transporting all the pads and equipment we need.
As regards the format of the racing, the RA prompted us to focus on E/1/2/3 racing; encouraging 4th cats to ‘find their feet’ on circuits other than Palace has been a sensible way to limit numbers and enhance safety. Following discussions with the SE Region on how to better structure women’s racing, we will continue the trend here too. The senior races will consist of:
· Women’s E/1/2
· Men’s E/1/2
· Men’s 3rd Cat Only
Working in conjunction with other race organisers and BC we feel the change to women’s racing will give other mid-week organisers an opportunity to attract and develop women’s racing with cat 3/4 and 2/3/4 racing. Crystal Palace, for many reasons, is the most technical racing circuit in London and should cater for the more experienced racers in both men’s and women’s events. The races are widely regarded as ‘the best crits in town’ for good reason and as such we will aim to continue hosting racing at the highest amateur level each Tuesday night throughout summer.
Please do feed back to me if you have any thoughts or ideas on how the series is run - we are always open to suggestions. My winter is very busy with my other sporting passion (skiing) so I can’t promise to reply straight away but I will be keeping active on the Palace front through the late winter and early spring. I will be in touch again in the new year to start compiling the calendar and asking for your support once again. We will run the first race on 8th May and will end mid to late August as usual.
Regards,
Ben, Bob and Dave.
