Similar to the sonic ambience of the film songs in Swades, the background score also incorporates a fusion of Indian and western arrangement and instrumentation. The Indian melodic and rhythmic instrumentation credited are Shehnai, Bansuri, Sitar, Santoor, Mandolin, Dholak, Tabla, Pakhawaj and Khol. The western instrumentation includes folk acoustic and bass guitar, harp, string section, accordion, drums and percussion. The musicians credited for the western instruments are of Indian origin, which is a significant showcase of the influences, that western films and popular music has had in Indian films [Ingle, 2015].
The composer implements musical themes for events to aid the narrative in addition to presenting shorter themes for character(s) and relationship(s) (romantic, maternal, comic, etc.). The compositional functions of these themes include conveying the emotions of the characters and events to the audience. In addition, they also provide contextual variety when treated with different instrumentation and arrangement. This is evidenced by recalling specific motifs/phrases from the songs within the film and layering them for specific sequences in order to avoid distracting the viewer from the narrative. These thematic relationships between musical motifs and character(s)/event(s) for specific cues present the viewer a metaphorical/emotional graph of the cinematic world showcased by the director with the help of the composer. Shorter themes are provided with a brief overview of the track, their narrative cues and functions.
