I will try this recipe soon (hopefully this weekend). I usually make beans the old fashioned way, but want to try in the crockpot. I actually want to do more crockpot recipes, because the crockpot in my house has just been collecting dust, lol.

Was looking for a good ham and bean crockpot recipe and saw this one. Currently in the crockpot as we speak. Did not have a ham hock, but did have spiral ham pieces that I bought at Walmart-live in Texas and as one reviewer posted the ham hocks available here are slightly bereft of meat. Looking forward to dinner tonight, as it has turned off windy and chilly here today. The hubs and I are originally from Georgia and really miss southern cooking. Crockpot is getting a workout after collecting dust for many years. Bon Apetit!!

These are the best beans I have ever had. Used the chicken broth method. It was my first time making ham hawk and beans and it was a huge hit! I run a daycare so I have a lot of picky eaters. All of them enjoyed this with some cornbread! Absolutely amazing! I will be searching for more recipes of yours to use! And the no soak part, definitely a HUGE bonus!

Hello Rosie. I was looking for a slow cooker recipe on cooking pinto beans and ham hock. I saw the website iHeartRecipes on the google search engine and clicked on it. This will be my first time cooking pinto beans in a slow cooker and using the slow cooker. My boyfriend and I works the night shift so I need to start using my slow cooker because we sleep doing the day. I enjoyed your southern cornbread video. It was very good. I see that you use different ingredients in your cornbread. I might try it. I usually use self-rising yellow cornmeal, buttermilk, eggs, a little flour, a little white sugar, vegetable oil and a little butter. Also, I already subscribed. Have a blessed evening. Freda H. I simply can not tell you how much I love this recipe. I was just looking for something different and found something I will never change again. This is the best pinto bean and ham hock recipe, I have ever made.

This recipe is amazing! I have looked for a restaurant quality refried bean recipe for a long time and I finally found it! ? I make it at least weekly now. I also make homeade chips to go with it and we just snack on the chips and dip. The downside of it is the smell. My house smells soooo good all day long but I have to wait 9 hours to eat them! LOL!!

I love tamales. Although they tended to be celebration food in the city of Saltillo because they are demanding time-wise to make and quite fiddly, María often made them and kept a stock in the frigidaire, ready to steam for my early morning breakfast trip to school and for lunch too. At their most basic, they consisted of a schmear of refried pinto beans and a few drops of a rusty red mole gasping out puffs of corn and chile-breathed steam as we unwrapped them—El dragónito. Bundled up in corn husks tied in the middle like a badly fitting housecoat, the masa bulged out, fluffy, palest yellow and leaking reddish chipotle-darkened juices of stewed pork.

Hi Kirby! So the canned beans are already cooked and have spices added to them. (I actually love them and will eat them straight from the can. They are legit.) Howeverrrr they are not the spices we are looking for for this recipe. SO. Your options are to drain the canned beans, rinse, and add to the homemade sauce, OR cook your own dry beans (any kind you can find recommended in the recipe, white bean etc.) Let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

Note: In the absence of smoking capability, cook the beans in a 225 degree oven until thick -- to chili consistency. Water can be added later to thin out if necessary. If you can find brisket ends or smoked meat ends at your local barbecue joint, you can use them for the recipe.

You need only 13 simple ingredients for making this fresh pinto beans recipe. These beans are a good source of fiber, vitamins, protein, minerals, and antioxidants that helps to maintain our heart health and blood sugar. The antioxidants of these beans lower the risk of chronic disease.

Black eyed peas, pinto beans, edamame, these are all legumes that are good sources of protein and can be a healthy substitute for meat. Having a meatless meal occasionally is good for your pocket book as they tend to be less expensive than some cuts of meat.

Soybeans are one type of legume that contains all the amino acids needed to make a complete protein, just like meat. They also contain isoflavones, a plant-based compound that may reduce the risk of some types of cancer. Soybeans are grown on about 3.3 million acres in Arkansas and generate about $1.7 billion annually. Soybeans rank as one of the top three crop commodities for Arkansas.

Although I tweaked the recipe to what I had on hand such as roasted red peppers instead of tomato paste and pinto beans with a jalapenos instead of chick peas, the dish was still fantastic and so easy. I made it in no time and I am sure leftovers will taste just as good

Very yummy! I made this with actually two big changes: I more than doubled the recipe with two cans of beans (one of cannellini and one of chick peas), and I used tortellini for the pasta, which increased the total cooking time, but made for a really delicious dish. The finishing sauce gives this dish a really bright, fresh flavor.

Made as written (with the parm rind) and we loved it. So simple but flavorful and one pot!! Skipped the finishing oil but next time will have to try it! Had roasted green beans with parmesan and garlic bread as sides. Thank you for a great recipe!

Fantastic and comforting! Plant based so I subbed field roast chorizo (not traditional, but had a nice smoky flavor- worked better than I expected) and veggie broth. Next time I would add one more can of beans, but overall it was a huge hit!! I served with cornbread. Thanks for the great, simple recipe.

I love Red Beans & Rice. This recipe was very simple and authentic to down south. I did have to add another can of beans, because I felt like there was less beans than other ingredients in the dish. I also added 1/2 tsp of liquid smoke. Otherwise, it was a very simple and delicious recipe.

This is my go-to red beans and rice recipe. Everyone loves it b/c it is SO good! Its one of only 2 recipes that my extremely picky 13 yr old son actively requests. My only caution is to know the heat/salt/flavor of your Cajun seasoning and keep it in mind as all brands have different levels.

I did add a little extra broth and let it simmer a bit longer and it thickened up nicely, smaahwd about half the beans and it was perfect. With spicy Anidoulle sausage it had just the right amount of heat without losing flavor. Everything in the recipe is spot on.

I made the chili today and it was a big hit. I doubled up on the pinto beans and left out the white beans. The chicken was not frozen and I cut it in strips before putting in the slow cooker to cut down on time. I had it on high for 1 hour and low for 1.5 hours. I would make this again. Very good.

This Bill Miller's green bean copycat recipe takes green beans to the next level and proves you can get a delicious meal in less than 30 minutes with simple ingredients and the right combinations. It is a delicious and easy-to-make dish rich in protein and bursting with flavor, while combining the tenderness of the green beans, the sweet taste of tomatoes, and the crispiness of bacon.

Sammy, thank you so much for your comment! You have a keen eye, and you're absolutely right. The bacon should be added back into the pan along with the beans to let the flavors meld beautifully. I've updated the recipe to reflect this step. I appreciate your help in making this recipe perfect!
