Hi Folks,

Something that has been steeping in my mind is the rise of computer vision / image & video analytics.

My thoughts have been that the previous untapped source of unstructured data was plain text, and hence we witnessed the rise and subsequent applications of natural language processing; and that what NLP is to plain text is what CV is to image & videos.

And after Zalora’s insightful presentation yesterday, namely on the point about applying computer vision to recognise trends, this thought has resurfaced in my mind.

So folks, what are your thoughts? The possibilities and also the compromised that wide-spread computer vision could bring into our future lives.

From my experience CV is great to supplement AI and many companies are already using it for better searching and categorising.
You just have accept that these are never perfect algorithms because they usually rely on very crude heuristics. So don't prosecute an innocent person because his face matched your database just yet, theres a lot of error still to take into factor.

Here is a company that I know which is doing very good work in this field.

You may be interested in looking at what they do if you have an interest in this field.

Thank you!

I believe video analytics is typically called video content analysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_content_analysis)

A quick Google of VCA + Hadoop results in this, but it is a press release and has absolutely nothing but buzzwords. http://www.hstreaming.com/press/hstreaming-unveils-video-analytics-for-big-data/

As for large-scale CV in general (not related to spotting trends), don't forget Google's recent updates to Google+ image search after their DNNResearch acquisition:

Video content analysis is also very useful to security agencies when investigating crime / terrorist attacks such as the Boston Marathon bombing.
