The standard knowledge of BigBlueButton users includes that videos from YouTube

or other streaming services can be shared via BBB-Functionality.

False in this respect are informations,

that videos must be taken from streaming platforms.

Rather, video URLs can also be added by some cloud services like DropBox

From the perspective of teachers (at schools and universities), a number of arguments speak against the use of commercial streaming services. The use of some videos is prevented by copyright issues (as in Germany, for example). On platforms like Vimeo, uploaded videos are public as long as the teacher does not get a commercial account. In Practice this is mostly done at private expense by the individual teacher.

That is why some media centers

Schools

or trainers and coaches

recommend the use of open source software, preferably on platforms of public institutions. This means, for example, that an open source cloud is operated on a school's server.

BBB has been linked with Nextcloud

successfully.

A number of recommendations now exist about these procedures, e.g. about the required file extensions.

For users the question arises as to what technical requirements cloud solutions - commercial or administrative or private - are tied to: What conditions must be met for audio or video files to be shared in BigBlueButton? No accessible information exists on this question.

Many schools do not offer Nextcloud or Owncloud solutions to their teachers.

Therefore, I tested - under non-scientific conditions - several possible solutions:
- DropBox
- Fritz!Box-NAS in the device folder and next to a connected USB hard drive
- Vodafone Comfort Cloud
- SpiderOak (CrossClave)
- pCloud
- box

My first Subject was a video file of the online-tv-recorder in "avi-mpg" format, which I had converted with the vlc-player into a ".mp4 file". It was a video, codec MPEG-4 (mp4v), video resolution 512x384, frame rate 25, audio bitrate 256 kB/s, 18.3MB.

This video could not be launched from any cloud in the Firefox browser via BBB. The message appeared in Firefox:  "Kein Video mit unterstütztem Format und MIME-Typ gefunden" or "No video with supported format and MIME type found". The available information about typical causes (outdated Firefox program, codecs, cookies pp.) were cross-checked in the process.

The Google Chrome browser only responded to the DropBox link. However, only the sound started, not the video.

Now I reduced the video resolution to the value 380x285 (calculation via:
https://rechneronline.de/optische-geraete/bildgroesse.php     )

With this file, too, the browsers only responded to the corresponding link of DropBox. Firefox started the video a bit jerky in the first five seconds, but then played it flawlessly. Chrome was able to start the video without any problems.

Further tests with video resolutions of 300 x 225, 250 x 188, 200 x 150 and 150 x 113 did not change the results.

Only the video links from DropBox could be opened in BBB.

The same result was seen when using an audio file in .mp3 format.

As a result, it can be stated: The best solutions are likely to be achieved via video files stored on Nextcloud or Owncloud servers of schools or universities. Where teachers are not offered such resources, the 2GB free account from DropBox can be a stopgap solution. However, video resolutions may need to be adjusted (reduced) using programs such as vlc. Those who are somewhat technically savvy can set up a Nextcloud or Owncloud themselves.

I would be very interested in your experiences!
