We've just started using BBB students to teachers. It works great but with one crucial problem:

There is a sound lag and issues with sound quality. The issue happens constantly often but not always.
This happens before even using uploading materials into BBB.

Any idea where the problem could lie?

Hi,

Take a look at this forum thread

and let us know if some of the suggestions there help you.

TL;DR: Use FireFox or Chrome for best audio.  Make sure you see '[ WebRTC Audio ]' in the lower righ-hand corner.

Regards,... Fred

many thanks for the reply Fred. Currently testing this.

One more question if you don't mind:
Does it make any difference to sound and video quality if we are using https or not? At the moment there is no https and wondering if we should switch.

Hi,

You'll want to setup BigBlueButton to use HTTPS/SSL, see

to enable Chrome to use WebRTC.  Without HTTPS/SSL, Chrome will fall back to using Flash audio (which is good, but not as good as WebRTC audio).

FireFox will use WebRTC audio with or without HTTPS/SSL.

Ok thanks Fred! I'm not a technical expert by any stretch of the imagination! I just need to figure out if we need to change anything and give advise to users. In most cases it is 2 people only and max 7 participants at a time.

From our servers pov:
Changing to HTTPS/SSL? It is required for Chrome users to get WebRTC which improves the sound quality. However, this won't make a difference for Firefox users who should already be automatically connected with WebRTC. Users of any other web browser may continue to still have problems too if flash audio is the issue.

From the users pov:
Check microphone/headset is working and properly set up with the echo test.

Always use Firefox or Chrome.

Check the firewall is not blocking port 1935 (might see [Tunneling] in bottom right)

Check their internet connection is not slow:
At least 0.5mbps upload / 1mbps download (might see [Reconnecting] in bottom right)
Avoid wireless if possible.

Check WebRTC is running ([WebRTC] in bottom right).

Thanks for your help Fred.
