In using our BBB conferencing platform I am noticing different issues for users depending on whether they have Firefox or Chrome. We have had the following 3 issues that I would really appreciate a solution to. Using HTML 5 only (no flash). In all cases they were in presenter mode.

1. Presenter not able to share screen in Firefox (first time - trying to get permission to work)

2. Presenter does not see the share screen tab on her iPod Pro - so she cannot proceed with permissions to share

3. While sharing my screen today on Chrome I got error 1007.ice negotiation failed (while sharing my screen) which forced me to completely reboot my computer.

Thanks!

Hi Jim,

The BigBlueButton HTML5 client does not require any plugins or apps for users to install -- it's pure HTML5.   Are you using your own BigBlueButton server or a server setup by a 3rd party?

1. Presenter not able to share screen in Firefox (first time - trying to get permission to work)

Hmm ... can you have them try it on

and let us know if you encounter the same issue.

> 2. Presenter does not see the share screen tab on her iPod Pro - so she cannot proceed with permissions to share

Safari on the iPad does not provide a way to share the user's screen -- either on iPod, iPad, or iPhone.

What operating system are you using?  Can you also try https://test.bigbluebutton.org/ and let us know if you can share your screen there.

Here's what the screen sharing should look like: https://youtu.be/d5v6Uar79Yc?t=301

Hi Fred,

1. The presenter having issues in Firefox on his MAC updated Firefox and share screen now works.

2. Presenter 2 using the iPod Pro was unable to share screen at all either using, Safari, Chrome, Firefox and your test site would not load on her iPod. Other features seem to work fine however on her iPod. Will that be addressed so she can share screen on ipod in the upcoming update?

3. My session load and work fine on Windows 10 and Chrome, however, they often crash when I am sharing screen (which I have no issues launching in Chrome) or doing other features that load during the conferences. About 1/2 of my sessions have crashed at some point.

We are fully committed to using BBB but need to do all possible to ensure stability for our students to minimize crashes.

Thanks Fred!

Hi,

Reading the above, are you saying the presenter is now OK with FireFox?

Unfortunately, Apple does not provide support the necessary WebRTC API calls (getDisplayMedia) in Safari Mobile, the browser in iPhone and iPad to share the screen.  Without these calls, the BigBlueButton client (or any other web-based client) cannot share the screen.

See

When you get a crash, you'll be prompted to send a crash report (either through Windows or through Chrome).   The browser should never crash, and there appears to be some instability in Chrome 72.

You an also file a bug with the Chrome menu "Help -> Report an Issue"

You should send the crash report each time you have an issue.  Chrome is very stable, but there is some instability around screen sharing.

Hi Fred,

Yes, presenter 1 - share screen works since Firefox was updated on Mac

Presenter 2 is out of luck with sharing screen on her iPod Pro re. of using Safari, Chrome or Firefox

I am presenter 3 using Win 10 Pro on Laptop where I had the fatal error that caused me to have to reboot while sharing screen. Unfortunately, like you said Chrome is a bit unsteady with screen share. Do you think Firefox is more stable in general with HTML 5 as we are not using Flash at all?

Thanks for your help! I know you probably get asked this all the time, but we are so looking forward to more control over chat and mics... I was wondering if you can give a hint as to what month you may be releasing the big update?

Hi Jim,

> Do you think Firefox is more stable in general with HTML 5 as we are not using Flash at all?

Both FireFox and Chrome are really good for HTML5.  Safari is a tier below, and Edge is below Safari.  Edge is moving to the Chromium engine,

> I was wondering if you can give a hint as to what month you may be releasing the big update?

We're working on getting it out fairly soon.  It will be as a beta, with much (but not quite all) of the functionality in place.  We're already testing with others.  Look for a message to bigbluebutton-dev when it's ready for others to install.

In the meantime, you can always try out the latest build here

and give us your feedback.
