Our BBB 1.0 is getting the following message: Detected the following WebRTC issue: Error 1005: Call ended unexpectedly. Do you want to try Flash instead?

We have a staff of over 10 people using this and all of them are getting it. So it's no personal networking issue I believe.

Please help us.

Hi Niels,

Can you provide more information on the networking setup ... is the BigBlueButton server within the same network on which users are accessing the server?

Is there a firewall in place on your network?

For demo.bigbluebutton.org, which is on an external network, any firewall that prevents UDP connections from 16384-32768 or terminates a long running web socket connection, will affect the audio.

I just did a quick test on demo.bigbluebutton.org and was able to access the audio without error.

Regards,... Fred

We don't use an internal network. So the users are from different parts of the world connecting to the BBB server and all get this 1005 error. So it might be something on the server itself.

No, firewall. Besides, only recently this error creeped up. After some update probably.

Hi Niels,

Can you also try switching between FireFox and Chrome and let us know if there is any difference.

Just did that, hehe. Yes, FireFox gives no problems at all. Chrome is doing so still.

Hi Niels,

Ahh ... do you have HTTPS setup on your server?  See

Chrome will not let users share their microphone using WebRTC without the page being loaded via HTTPS.  See also

When HTTPS isn't set up and you try to join a call from WebRTC it presents a message saying something like, "Could not get microphone", but in this case it's an internal error. It sounds more like the ECDSA issue from Chrome 52. To fix that see this section in the install docs (http://docs.bigbluebutton.org/install/install.html#install-ppa-for-libreoffice-44-and-libssl).

Fred,
I am facing the same issue in 1.0 version, WebRTC always fails with 1005 error. But it used to work perfectly till last week(only in Firefox), suddenly it popped up with this error even in firefox(I am aware that chrome will not allow http connection for WebRTC, hence I stick to firefox), This happened when I ran sudo apt-get update to update flash player. I didnt set up HTTPS, hence I am sticking to firefox for WebRTC audio. I even tried to setup https, but still the issue remains, hence I rolled back https. Here I am giving client check log.

Hi Venkanna,

We recently put together a video on how to install BigBlueButton 1.1-beta with a hostname and configure it with a secure socket layers (SSL) certificate to enable nginx to send/receive data via HTTPS.  See

You do want to install SSL in any event.  The steps are there for 1.0, see

If it's an option to setup a Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit server, you could install BigBlueButton 1.1-beta with SSL.

Overall, you'll find the installation steps are easier for 1.1-beta and you'll get SSL configured which should help with with your issues for both FireFox and Chrome.

Regards,... Fred
