Hi everyone,

I am trying to install BBB in Ubuntu 12.04 Server (64 bit). I managed to install everything up to Ruby and on 'sudo apt-get install bigbluebutton' I am getting the following error,

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
bigbluebutton : Depends: bbb-config but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I searched and found the following post by Douglas Young who've faced the same error,

I know that BBB is currently developed on Ubuntu 10.04 and as per the above thread, the solution that Douglas has been asked to follow is to downgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 which has worked for him.

But in my case, I need to start the development in the latest Ubuntu 12.04 itself.

As Chad Pilkey has indicated in the above thread, currently the BBB packages are built for Ubuntu 10.04.

Is there anyway that I can build the packages from source in Ubuntu 12.04 to come out of this error?

I also looked at setting up the dev environment section of the BBB wiki, and it seems that we have to use the bbb-conf to setup the dev environment itself (bbb-conf --setup-dev tools). But the problem I am facing is bbb-conf only comes with the BBB installation itself.

Any steps, wiki page or help that I can use to setup the dev environment without the use of bbb-conf file and compile the packages from source to Ubuntu 12.04 is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Bathiya.

Hi Bathiya,

We're not planning to move BigBlueButton to 12.04 for 0.81 (currently in development), but we will move to 12.04 for a future iteration.  See

Why?  It's the development and testing of the packaging that takes a significant amount of time.  There are only two states for packaging: it works (perfectly) or it's broken.  Is it an option for you to run BigBlueButton on a 10.04 server and your other applications on a 12.04 server?

Believe me, as the author of the packing, we want to move to 12.04, but that will need to occur after 0.81.  I think most members of our community would like to see 0.81 released sooner than later.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the reply.
Well in that case, I think I will have to start from 10.04 for now. Your suggestion for using two Ubuntu boxes is actually a good idea although it is a workaround and I will give it a thought. However, I would rather prefer to have all pieces inside a single Ubuntu box in the long run to avoid complications.
Anyway it's great news to hear that you will be moving to 12.04 soon. I will definitely be one of the very first to benefit from it.

Thanks and Regards,
Bathiya
