Hi guys,

I've been trying to set up BigBlueButton for a Spanish school for
online courses since December. The discussions/forums have been
invaluable and I've been on a steep learning curve.

My first step was to set up the BBB Virtual machine on my desktop
Mac. I managed to get it all working but the lag was quite noticeable
for the audio. Then, I got a separate machine (albeit and old one)
and went through the whole process again. The lag improved, but not
to any extent that we could actually use it.

Finally, we've contracted a VPS with a massively fast connection,
but... it seems that it's a CENTOS 5.5 64 bit server with cPanel and
the forums aren't looking any good there. The server guy told me he
had come across a forum where they had successfully installed an
earlier version.

I've got root access via ssh and everything.

I tried downloading the package from the terminal window:

CentOS 5.4 32-bit Stable: if you are not sure, this is probably the
one you need. Use the following command to download the install
script:

wget http://ec2-67-202-22-38.compute-1.amazonaws.com/centos/5.4/i386/stable/bbb-install.sh

But.. my connection was refused. My server guy told me it must be
from the other end because wget works for other stuff.

I'm really committed to getting it working as I think it's great
software, and could really use some help or pointing in the right
direction.

Hello,
"wget http://ec2-67-202-22-38.compute-1.amazonaws.com/centos/5.4/i386/stable/bbb-install.sh"

Are you sure you are following the same proceeds here: http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/InstallingBigBlueButtonCentOS as i can not seem to see where the wget link is referenced on that page.

Regards

Hi Simon,

The RPM packages for BigBlueButton are out-of-date.  The text at the top of the RPM install page says

These instructions are for 0.64 and are now out of date; furthermore, the links are no longer valid.

We recommend using the Ubuntu packages.

We recommend getting a VPS server with Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit or 64-bit and installing BigBlueButton through packages.  Will take about 15 minutes.

Also, if your audio delay is about 2 seconds, that's good for BigBlueButton.  The delay will be longer depending on the network between the user and BigBlueButton server.  For more information see

Hi there... thanks for getting back so quickly! I found the link to
the packages script on: http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/InstallingBigBlueButtonCentOS

where it says "if you want an easier install you can use the packages.
Of course, if you want to really understand how BigBlueButton is
setup, going through the following step-by-step instructions will show
you how to install BigBlueButton from source."

One thing I'm worried about with the step by step procedure is for
example, these instructions:

# install MySQL server
yum install -y mysql-server
service mysqld start
chkconfig mysqld on

Will they interfere with the MySQL server that already came pre-
installed on the VPS server? I don't want to overwrite it as there is
a website there which is using it as well.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for getting back to me so soon. In fact, I did want to get
Ubuntu on the VPS server, but our company has gone in with another one
who wanted cPanel.

I'm wondering if I can partition part of the drive on the server and
install Ubuntu on it separately. I don't even know if this is
possible.

Gosh, I thought that a BBB on a dedicated fast server would eliminate
the lag. I'm wondering if It might not be the best package for an
online language course if there's always going to be a noticeable lag
as this would make conversing a bit difficult. I really want to get
it to work well, because I think the environment and project is
amazing.

Hi there,

These CentOS instructions assume that you have root access to the
server and a bit of Linux. Please keep in mind they are out-of-date
and unsupported.

Ideally, you want to install BigBlueButton on a dedicated server that
is only running BigBlueButton. If you have other existing web-based
applications already running, you'll need to know a lot more than a
'bit' of linux as you'll have to modify either the existing
application or BigBlueButton (through bbb-conf and nginx
configurations) to get both to work side-by-side.

> Will they interfere with the MySQL server that already came pre-
> installed on the VPS server?

Recommend you setup a CentOS VM on a local macine and go through the
installation instructions yourself first. That way, you can't harm
your existing web-based application.

Again, we don't provide any support (at the moment) for the CentOS
installation. We expect this will change, but for the moment we're
really focused on making sure the Ubuntu installation
instructions/packages work well.

Simon, you wont have much luck trying to run BBB on a VPS that is
managed with cpanel... You should just fire up a supported 10.04
Ubuntu LTS Instance on Amazon EC2 and run BBB there... If audio
delay over the internet is an issue.. You can tie inbound telephone
numbers to BBB and give students the ability to talk with instructor
real time over telephone bridge when they need to do the oral testing,
and use voip for the basic online training.

If you need help check out http://www.bigbluebutton.org/support and
one of the commericial support providers can get you up and running in
a few hours.

Thanks Fred,

In the end we ditched the CentOS and have tried on various virtual
servers with Ubuntu 10.4 with an increase in delay! Now I've
partitioned my desktop mac to run the Ubuntu server and we're getting
much better results. I'm now jiggling with the conference.conf.xml to
find settings which might improve the lag.

Kind regards,

Simon

Hi everybody,
I setuped local server BBB. It's excellent for LAN.
I want to get video/audio from VSX 7000s via Aver Media Capture card (C038) as Moderator for broadcasting to any user of room, but I can't (picture). The capture card connected to client (Ubuntu 9.10). When I used guvcview, it didn't work. I used luvcview, it displayed "the size 640x840 do not support for this device".
Everbody show me the way to fix this problem, please ?

Hi Le,

I think you cross-posted your question in two threads. No need to do
that ... a single post is sufficient to solicit help from the
community.
