Hello All,

I know that this has been discussed by many folks on this forum, and I
have looked at a lot of the information given, but I have been
fighting with this issue and have followed all the instructions. Here
is where I stand...

I installed BBB fine, here is the output from bbb-conf -c

BigBlueButton:~# bbb-conf -c

BigBlueButton Server 0.71
Kernel version: 2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (32-bit)
Memory: 3782 MB

/var/www/bigbluebutton/client/conf/config.xml
Port test (tunnel): 192.168.1.41
Red5: 192.168.1.41

/etc/nginx/sites-available/bigbluebutton
server name: 192.168.1.41
port: 80
bbb-client dir: /var/www/bigbluebutton

/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/WEB-INF/classes/
bigbluebutton.properties
(bbb-web)
bbb-web host: 192.168.1.41

/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/demo/bbb_api_conf.jsp (API
demos)
bbb-web-api host: 192.168.1.41

/usr/share/red5/webapps/bigbluebutton/WEB-INF/red5-web.xml
voice conference: FreeSWITCH

** Potential problems described below **
BigBlueButton:~#

This works fine internally.

Now, when I try to connect from outside, I get the welcome to nginx!
page.

I have a url bbb.myurl.net which points to the public address in my
firewall, I have opened all ports (for testing purposes) to make sure
80, 1935 and 9123 are opened.

I edited the /etc/hosts file with 192.168.1.41 bbb.olk12.net (as
instructed) and the command bbb-conf --setip bbb.olk12.net then the
bbb restarts its self. when it comes back, it runs for a while then
the server shuts down. (did not see anyone else with this issue)

If I reset the bbb-conf --setip 192.168.1.41 it works internally
again.

I am using ubuntu 10.4 as the documents suggested.

on a VMWare ESXi 3.5 server

Thank you for any guidance you can give.

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

You have request to bbb.myurl.net forward by your firewall to your
internal BigBlueButton server. You want your BigBlueButton server
listening and responding to those requests.

Try the following (change bbb.myurl.net with the real hostname if it's
different).

1. Edit /etc/hosts to add the following line

192.168.1.41 bbb.myurl.net

2. Check that bbb.myurl.net resolves by doing the following

ping bbb.myurl.net

You should get some packets back.

3. Type

sudo bbb-conf --setip bbb.myurl.net

This tells BigBlueButton to listen for incoming requests to bbb.myurl.net.

4. Try

http://bbb.myurl.net/

Let us know if it works.

Regards,... Fred

Hello Fred,

I did do these steps before, and just to make sure, I did them
again....

I can reach he Big Blue Button only with my internal IP, I do not have
an internal DNS, so I can not point to the internal IP for everyone
using DNS. When I try to the url/public IP I continue to get the
welcome to nginx! page.

I am using an endian firewall, and for testing I have opened all
ports both inbound and outbound to and from the private and public
IP's, so I don't think that is a problem, bbut I could be wrong.

I can reach the red5 page with port 8088, and the tomcat page with
8080. Is this any help?

When I enter the bbb.myurl.net in the /etc/hosts file, there is
already an entry

192.168.1.41 BigBlueButton.myurl.net BigBlueButton

Can I add another 192.168.1.41 ?

Do you have the bbb-conf -c output of your bbb? maybe you could doctor
it up so I could compare.

I just did a test, and I changed my url to myurl.info, and re-did the /
etc/hosts file and bbb-conf --setip myurl.info and now I get to the
front page (internal ip) but I get a 404 Not Found page...

I am so lost...

Thanx,

Bruce

Fred,

I assume this link was for me - I tried it out, still same problem. I'll try again once I'm home from work - not sure what else could be causing the problem  - as I mentioned, the .64 downloaded with no issues, at a high speed.

The .71 .zip file starts fast (somewhere between 2-3 MB/sec). but ALWAYS dies at 358 MB (regardless if it's a direct download from sourceforge, or off of a mirror site).
Either way, I appreciate the assistance, and I'll keep you updated if I have any success.

Hi Scott,

Hmmm ... do try the sf.net and bigbluebutton.org links from home, and
let us know if you were able to download the VM.
