Hi all,

We've just installed BBB on a VPS server with Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS and
it's all working spectacularly, except for the audio lag.

After trying out various servers both in the states (we're in
Australia) we've settled on a local one who has promised a superfast
connection and they do seem to be delivering.

I've been playing around with the conference.conf.xml file changing
settings etc, but no matter what changes I make there when I do a bbb-
conf --clean none of them are expressed in the quality. I've tried
setting to the rate to 20 and up to 20000 but to no avail.

We're especially keen on switching off the cropping and increasing and
decreasing the sample rate as we are conducting language classes.
We're trying to find a way of reducing the lag to under 1000
miliseconds and increasing the quality of the audio.

Is there something I'm missing for these changes to be expressed on
restart?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Simon

Hi Simon,

If you setup BigBlueButton on a local area network and connect to it
within that network, you'll experience audio lags of about 1 second.
On the internet, if you experience an audio lag of about 2 seconds,
your doing well. The average will be 3-4 seconds.

We've done a lot of work to improve the audio; there is more work
ahead of us. You can see the progress of our efforts in this issue

There is a Voice lag of around 3-4 Sec during Voice Chart over VOIP:
http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/issues/detail?id=740

So, there's nothing missing in your efforts. High quality audio for
voice conferencing over the internet is a tough nut to crack.

The above issue gives some suggestions on improving the audio, but
they are a step beyond the current BigBlueButton architecture.

To turn off the cropping of the audio (I think we refer to it as
clipping) see this FAQ entry:

http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/FAQ#Why_do_others_only_hear_part_of_my_audio?

In the meantime, you'll continue to see (or I should say hear)
improvements to BigBlueButton's audio in future iterations.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your prompt reply once again. Well, I think we are doing
quite well with an external VPS server and only a one second delay in
the audio.

I did reduce the energy parameter to 5 and then to 0 and then did a
bbb-conf --clean and a bbb-conf restart but there was no effect on the
clipping at all. Interestingly, when I swapped to Asterisk, the
speakers were constantly on and the lag was less noticeable, so it
would be good to get Freeswitch to do the same. I wonder why it's not
showing up on start up?

I have to say that we are totally behind the BBB and will continue to
develop it for the language school as we have faith that this issue
will be resolved. Also, we are very grateful for all the work all
developers are doing to make BBB the best open source conferencing
solution.

I was struck by the whole TCP and UDP issue. Our solution, then is to
use a combination of Bigbluebutton for the one to many classroom
situation and a peer to peer solution for one-to-one situations until
the audio quality and lag improve on the BBB architecture.

Once again thanks for your fast and very helpful reply,

Simon

Simon, we had chatted before... Turn up some DID's and your
instructors can get on phone directly with student during the critical
instruction or testing, and use voip for the majority of normal
training where instructor is lecturing.

Aso would be interested in doing trace routes between your students
and the current VPS server to see the network latency and compare it
to the EC2 data centers in US, UK, and Asia where can we run bbb
instances.

Are all your students in Australia?

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Yes, I remember chatting, hope you're well. Yes, we're looking into
direct dial in as well as a solution for the audio lag. Would you
know any older posts or sets of instructions on how to do that?

I'm happy to help in anyway I can with the trace routes, and yes at
the moment we are basing the classes solely in Australia.

Kind regards,

Simon

Hi everybody,

I use KVM ( in Debian Lenny 64 bits server) for run BBB virtual image
( qcow2 format)
Also esjayoung2, everything working, except for the audio.
I have two or three seconds of delays in the conversation !

Also, I saw there was already preconfigured extensions
( 1000,1001,etc...). I managed to record two extensions in the VOIP
software Twinkle.
How can I make calls to internal extension to another because I tried
but it does not work !
I'd like to know what changes to make in order to call FreeSwitch
these extensions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Mick974

Mick, a good source to learn about using the pbx features of
freeswitch is

http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Main_Page

If you find out how to do it let us know, we can tie inbound DIDs to
bbb conference with no problem, but have never had a request to get
the internal sip extensions operating but it should be easy.

regards.
