First, I'm sorry for my bad English.

I have a virtual server VPS Intel XEON E31230 3.20 GHz with 2GB of ram, managed with WHM-Cpanel. On the server I have hosted three websites (wordpress) with little traffic. My installation of BigBlueButton be for occasional use and very few users. Can I purchase more RAM (4GB) and install BigBlueButton on this server, or do I need a new server just for BigBlueButton?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Simón,

If you are using WHM-Cpanel it sounds like you are using a webhosting server that just happens to be running on a virtualised server. WHM cPanel work on the idea of accounts, 1 account being 1 website. Each account is given a set amount of disk space but can’t be setup to provide account 1 with more ram or cpu than account 2, by that I mean it can control disk and network usage per account but not cpu or ram usage

Do you have login to WHM-cPanel as a cPanel user or as the WHM administrator? The cPanel interface looks like this http://hostyorkshire.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/cpanel_screen.jpg while the WHM interface looks like http://www.thewhir.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/cpanel-nav.jpg

If its cPanel you can’t do a lot because you don’t have access to the whole server

If its WHM you should be able to find out from the organisation that’s providing the underlying hardware to see if they can upgrade the virtual server to get more ram but this is outside of anything possible using the WHM interface

If it helps it might be useful to think of it in layers from top to bottom

1)      Your wordpress or BBB site

2)      Next down is cPanel

3)      Below that is WHM

4)      Below that is the virtualisation software used to provide the virtual machine running WHM (could be any number of products but maybe vmware, vsphere) .Its at this level the amount of RAM , CPU and disk is defined for each virtual machine and it should  be possible to define more for your virtual machine

5)      Physical Hardware somewhere in the world doing the calculations

Michael

First many thanks for helping me.

Yes, I have access to WHM. I also talk to purdo virtual server provider to hire more RAM and CPU.

Can I create a new account (as for a word press site) and install BBB on it? How complicated is it to do? Can it cause problems? Is there a manual that explains how to access the new account as root to install BBB?

Thank you so much

Hi Simón,

We would recommend running BigBlueButton on a dedicated server (not on a shared hosted server using cpanel).  See these entries in the FAQ for more information:

I would suggest moving away from WHM for BBB because WHM is mainly aimed at websites that need php and mysql using apache webserver. BBB uses different technology to what WHM can provide it but you might be able to get it working but just as likely cause problems for WHM and BBB and leave you with a broken server

You should ask your virtual server provider for a new virtual machine that you will use for BBB only, preferably Ubuntu so you can follow the installation instructions here http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/InstallationUbuntu and the forum users can help you if you run into trouble.

Once its installed your accounts like wordpress should be able to access your BBB server if its on the internet and you have each server doing what its configured best to do.

If that sounds like too much hassle or cost maybe consider finding a BBB provider and leave them the headache of keeping it running

Dear Michael and Fred:

Thank you so much. Your support has helped me to have it completely clear. I'll hire a new server dedicated to BBB.

Thank you very much again.

Regards,

Simon

Hi Simón,

If your not doing any recording, that's plenty of space.
