I have successfully set up bbb on a linux virtual machine. The ip address takes me to a bbb demo page on the linux machine. If I try to join the demo I get an error. See screenshot. How can I fix this?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

I would suggest installing the openssh-server package and use putty to SSH into your VM instead of the default VM interface. You're missing the top half of the output. Using putty will allow you to copy and paste and scroll up. From what I can see there's a ton of IP mismatches. Did you move the VM from one computer to another? I'm not sure where the 192.168.145.131 would have come from as normally when there's an IP mismatch it's one digit off on the last number. Running "bbb-conf --setip 192.168.58.128" might fix some of your issues. I would try that first and see what is left after that.

Hi There,

We would also recommend to try using the bbb-install.sh script to automate the steps of setting up BigBlueButton.  See

Try the above and let us know if it gets you further towards a working setup.

Thank you so much for all help. I have now got the virtual machine working and can join the demo. Fred, can I now set up the actual BBB using your suggestion on this server for others to join and if so how?

If you install GreenLight on the server as well, see

you can provide an easy-to-use front end for your BigBlueButton server.

Hi Fred. I am pretty new to this so please bear with me. I have made a fresh install of ubuntu and set up the new machine. I am setting up BBB 2 and entering:
wget -qO- https://ubuntu.bigbluebutton.org/bbb-install.sh | bash -s -- -v xenial-200
I get the following:
bbb-install: you must run this as rootI have used sudo before the entry:
sudo
wget -qO- https://ubuntu.bigbluebutton.org/bbb-install.sh | bash -s -- -v xenial-200
used password but still get the same response. I have checked the error logs and there is nothing there to indicate an issue.
Your thoughts?
Thanks Fred

Hi there,

Try this

# First switch to the user root
sudo su - root

# Then run the command
wget -qO- https://ubuntu.bigbluebutton.org/bbb-install.sh | bash -s -- -v xenial-200

Further to my last post. I remembered your post about greenlight. See screenshot for an attempt. Is the install entry different for a virtual?

The hostname (for '-s') doesn't look correct.  You have 'bbb.' in front of the IP address.  You'll need to assign a proper hostname that resolves to the external IP address of the BigBlueButton server.

Hi Fred
Appreciate your patience with this 67 year old newbbie. The attached screenshot shows the ipconfig. I have tried the 192.168.58.131 which is the ip that allows the demo. I also tried the broadcast ip 192.168.58.255, but neither works. Does this mean that Greenlight cannot be set up on a virtual server?

Hi,

Can you try setting up a new VM and installing using

It should detect your network setup and install BigBlueButton accordingly.  Give it a try and let us know if it gets you going.

Hi Fred

I have installed a new VM and reinstalled BBB as you asked. The BBB demo install wrked perfectly and I was able to use the demo. I tried to purrge the demo but the web interface still allows me to use demo-server - but there does not appear to be a way to invite others to join the session? I then tried to install greenlight again but got the same error as before (see screenshot). I have looked around the net and cannot find a solution. The demo does recognise the ipaddress 192.168.132.128 but it the DNS lookup resolution that seems to be the issue. BBB is a great tool and would love to have it up and running.

Once again appreciate your atempts to assist.

Hi,

>  The demo does recognise the ipaddress 192.168.132.128 but it the DNS lookup resolution that seems to be the issue.

That's correct -- you are specifying an IP address for the hostname of the server (via -s 192.168.132.128), but you need to have a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) assigned to the server (such as my.bbb-server.com) that resolves to the server's IP address.

Is this a virtual machine running on your computer?   If you intend to have others use the BigBlueButton server, we recommend setting up BigBlueButton on a server that is accessible to users on the internet via a FQDN.   With that in place, you can setup both GreenLight and SSL using bbb-install.sh.

Hi Fred
Thank you for your time and trouble. I understand the issues fully now and they are as I thought. At least the exercise has made me very competent in using BBB. I have discovered this morning a website http://mconf1-bbb.belnet.be/conference/ who use BBB with a conference room. Do you know them and are they OK?
Once again many thanks

Hi Martin,

Sorry -- we do know mconf (the wrapping of the line in the editor made it easy to miss the 'mconf' part).  Mconf is a company that has been contributing to BigBlueButton project for over six years and has a lot of really smart people.  You are in good hands if you have hosting from Mconf.

Adekunle,

Can you start a new thread with your post and we'll help you there.  When you post to the new thread, let us know if you used bbb-install.sh to install BigBlueButton or if you followed the install steps.

Regards,... Fred
