Disable chat in HTML5 client

Hi,

first I want to say thanks to all developers that created this very beautiful HTML5 client! :-)

I would like to ask if it is possible to disable the chat. And (but not so important) the telephone symbol. Is this possible?

I ask because I want to use mainly the whiteboard functions (and screensharing) in a presence learning environment.

If your users are all HTML5, you can lock the chat with these properties https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/blob/master/bigbluebutton-html5/private/config/settings-production.json#L47. You can also lock the microphone which will disable the ability for viewers to join with a microphone. You can additionally disable the listenOnly mode https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/blob/master/bigbluebutton-html5/private/config/settings-production.json#L9. I'm not 100% sure what will happen when both are disabled though.

It's also important to note that lock settings won't apply to moderators.

You mean, I should set

"publicChat": false,

 

to true? And this may only work for non-moderators?

or

"publicChat": true,

does not work for me. The chat is still available.

I believe there was a bug with the locking of chat in 2.0-RC4. The bug should be fixed in RC5 that we released 12 hours ago (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/bigbluebutton-dev/DyTRpYjmLTI). Can you try updating your packages and test it again. Both "publicChat" and "privateChat" should be set to true.

I updated to the new RC5 but I am still not able to disable the chat. I tried the new version of 

settings-production.json and also the older RC4 version.

However, I know HTML5 is still in development and I think I will wait a litle bit until the development is advanced :-)

Hi Wolfgang,

In HTML5 client on BBB 2.0-RC5 you can disable the chat functionality for viewers by removing 'sendChat' from the allowed methods in https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/blob/v2.0.x-release/bigbluebutton-html5/private/config/settings-production.json#L119

Alternatively, a moderator logged in through Flash client can set lock settings including public/private chat lock.

The ability to customize the features included in the HTML5 client in a more full and dynamic way is on our developer road map.
