I contacted HostGator and found out that it is possible to have a subdomain with Ubuntu 10.4 under my domain running CentOS.

I'm a little-knowledge-is-dangerous kind of guy, but would it be complicated (and are there instructions) to be able to set up a BBB installation using a hosted server like that at HostGator?

And if so, subsequently, I'm wondering if there ever has been an update either to the Joomla BBB module or a BBB Moodle activity module . . .

Ho Joel,

I would be cautious about trying to install BigBlueButton on a server provided by HostGator.  In the past, we've observed others having difficulties with ensuring all the prerequisites are met

If you do install, make sure you have all the software dependencies in place and don't ignore any errors and then continue with in the installation steps.

Regarding the Joomla and Moodle module, the Moodle module sees regular updates (almost monthly releases to moodle.org plugin database).  If you want the latest master, see

for a link to the source code repository for the latest version.  The Joomla module is lagging in updates because the interest in Moodle and WordPress is much higher.

Thanks for steering me away from what sounds like could be a rip current of hassles and heartaches. It sounds like the effort it would take is well beyond my limits.

So, if I am trying to do this as efficiently and economically as possible, it sounds like I simply ought to get a spare computer "dedicating" it for this purpose, set it up with Ubuntu 10.4, install BigBlueButton, and try to open a port securely to our school network/server.

(1) Is there a list of recommended requirements for a computer used as a BBB server? CPU? Memory? Hard Drive?

(2) Is there an "Idiot's Guide" to setting up BBB? (I'm only barely familiar with Linux distros, but I have numerous incentives to begin learning it better.)

(3) Any instructions on opening a port securely for the purpose of streaming video from our school? Or better yet, where I could find someone to help set this up and get us started for a modest fee?

Perhaps it's just wishful thinking for me to hope that I could get this done in our little setting, but I've seen BBB demonstrated at a Moodle Moot and I think it would be a great tool for communication and education. But even if you have nothing more than a dose of realism, that at least keeps me from getting tangled up in a time and resource wasting situation.

Thanks again.

Hi Joel,

There is documentation.

See

This document has been the go-to place for months to install BigBlueButton 0.81-beta-2.  It's very detailed.  If you hit an error, don't over look it and continue with the install.  Google the error and look for solutions.  There is also a troubleshooting section.

(3) Any instructions on opening a port securely for the purpose of streaming video from our school? Or better yet, where I could find someone to help set this up and get us started for a modest fee?

There is no security in BigBlueButton.  For a more detailed response, see

If you are looking at opening ports, depending on your firewall configuration -- is your firewall on the server itself, or is your firewall a separate server -- the answer will depend on your configuration.

Superb, thanks. It's so good because you accomplish so much with an efficiency use of words and resources!
