Hello again! :)

18 months ago I've installed BigBlueButton 2.4.4 on an Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS.

I've never made an update since then.

Can you tell me, how to update Ubuntu/BigBlueButton/Greenlight without destroying something?

I think for Ubuntu I can run "apt-get update" with "apt-get upgrade"

But I don't know how to update BigBlueButton/Greenlight.

Is it possible to update BBB/Greenlight to the latest 2.4.* version?

When yes, will the .env file be touched and the users on the server?

I wish I could update Ubuntu/BigBlueButton/Greenlight without touching the configuration. Only an update and everything is working as before.

I'm very thankful for answers and I wish a good week! :)

BigBlueButton 2.6 runs on Ubuntu 20.04, whereas 2.4 was on Ubuntu 18.04.

We would recommend setting up a Ubuntu 20.04 server using bbb-install.sh with BigBlueButton + GreenLight using bbb-install.sh, then follow the docs to migrate over the recordings.

To migrate over the GreenLight v2 to v3 database, follow the steps here

Doing the above will not make any changes to your 2.4.4 version, which means if any of the above steps fail, you can start the migration again from the beginning.

Regards,.. Fred

Hmm Ok.

Then the recommended way is to update BBB to 2.6 on a fresh Ubuntu installation.

If there is a way to update 2.4.4 to 2.4.7, I'd love to hear how it's done. The reason is: A customer asked if his server was affected by a certain security vulnerability. According to my research, version 2.4.7 is closed with regard to this gap and the currently installed version 2.4.4 is affected. As I said - if there is a possibility, I am very happy to hear how it works! :)

Thank you! :)

Hi,

just like Fred said, for 2.5 and 2.6 (also 2.7) you need to start fresh (install a new instance of Ubuntu 20.04).
If you want to upgrade 2.4 use the same install script that you used for the installation (wget... bbb-install...). This is documented and I don't think has changed at all in recent versions (2.4, 2.5, 2.6).
Do watch out for all the customization you have made since the install script could overwrite said settings. Backup all BBB config files to be on the safe side.
Also, 2.4 is EOL, which means the developers will not be updating this version anymore. It is recommended that you upgrade to 2.6 (2.5 will also be EOL pretty soon).

Regards,
J.

Hello again everyone! :)

In https://docs.bigbluebutton.org/administration/install/#upgrading-bigbluebutton-27 it is said, that I have to rerun the bbb-install.sh script for updating the machine.

In https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/issues/9280 in the last post, there are commands, for update bbb with apt and greenlight with a pull command.

Now my question: What is the best way to keep BigBlueButton up to date?

In the moment Im thinking that the best way is to use the bbb-install.sh script?
Here are some questions about the script method:
- will the script update the Ubuntu OS, too?
- I have to save customizations?
- are there other things to think about?
- the script will update Ubuntu, Greenlight and BigBlueButton in one? :)

Im very thankful for answers and I stay with kind regards
Goodfred

Hi,

It is NEVER a good idea to "update" BBB through apt. Here are some answers to you questions:
- yes
- yes, or use the files in /etc/bigbluebutton
- can't really understand what you're asking
- yes

Good! :D

Then the best way to keep the machine inclusive BBB + Greenlight up to date, is to rerun the bbb-install-script again!
(with a backup of the files, which are not in the docker-compose.yml ! :) )

Have a good evening! :)
