Update of Ubuntu with BBB 2.4.4

Hello everyone!

I've set up a time ago an Ubuntu 18.04 server with BBB 2.4.4.

Now my question is: How should I update the machine?

I mean standard security fixes/etc. for Ubuntu.

Can I run "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" without a problem?

When I login, Ubuntu says: 56 updates can be applied immediately.

Hi Goodfred,

From our experience, never do "apt-get upgrade", the safe in general was:

Back up recordings on another volume or server. we used:

    scp -r -C -p /var/bigbluebutton/published/presentation root@destination:/var/bigbluebutton/published/

create a new fresh box with updates.

install latest BBB  server.

restore recordings using:

    scp -r -C -p root@destination:/var/bigbluebutton/published/  /var/bigbluebutton/published/presentation

Then it seems like we cannot update the Ubuntu 18.04 system without a migration to a new server?

Hi,
if you upgrade BBB through apt or apt-get, you'll make a mess and won't be able to run BBB properly. Just like Ali said, never do "apt-get upgrade" if you see "bbb-*" packages that need to be upgraded. You can upgrade Ubuntu 18.04 packages only if you do not see "bbb-*" packages when you do an "apt-get update".

The best way to update BBB is through the install script. This will also update your Ubuntu 18.04 Server.

If you want to upgrade BBB from 2.4.4 to 2.5.5, you need to install Ubuntu 20.04 "from scratch", that is, backup recordings, backup settings, etc. and install Ubuntu 20.04 fresh from CD/DVD/ISO.
Do NOT install BBB 2.5 to an Ubuntu 18.04. Do NOT upgrade Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 IN the server itself. You need to reinstall Ubuntu 20.04, NOT upgrade it.

You can do the upgrade in place, but recommend doing a separate new server as it gives you the opportunity to start over if you encounter any issues.
