Hello
We are considering moving our BBB server to another data center. So far we have used a system with a Ryzen 7-3700x with 8 cores and 16 threads. The new system would use a Core i5-13500 with 6 performance cores, 8 energy-efficient cores and 20 threads.

That sounds like more computing power at first, but we are not sure whether the concept with the energy-efficient cores is well suited for a BigBlueButton server. Do any of you have experience with the newer Intel CPUs?

Thank you for your feedback
Frank

You'll definitely want to use the HWE kernel, so that you have a chance of getting a kernel which can decently use the different architecture/layout of the CPU.
It can be installed like this:
apt update && apt install linux-generic-hwe-20.04 -y && reboot now

I'd suggest cautiously testing that server, because ubuntu 20.04 is already quite "old" regarding current hardware support and thus I am not sure how well the CPU scheduling will work for the new CPU even with the 5.15 kernel.

In any case, please report your results here after testing. Thanks!

Thank you basisbit for the interesting link. So it might be a good idea to wait for a bbb version which uses ubuntu 22 before switching to that intel data center.

@basisbit
I was too curious - we have now switched our BBB server to a current Intel system (i5-13500 - Hetzner EX44). I previously updated the kernel to 5.15.0-69-generic. According to various forums, the Alder Lake architecture should be supported with it.

A test with Sysbench resulted in a CPU index of 4100. Our old system (Ryzen 1700x) came up with 2100, so the system should have plenty of computing power. So far BBB is doing pretty well, but we haven't had any big meetings since the switch.
