connections Problems and Error 1007

Hello
we have multiple instances of bigbluebutton running in a company network (hospital).
since a few weeks we suddenly started having problems when people from outside tried joining meetings. Either they get failure 1007 when trying to connect to the audio stream and video is either extremly choppy or not working at all.

The servers were unchanged in for multiple months and working fine before. I now updated all to the latest version but the problems persist. I am unsure if this is really a problem with our instances or a network error. How would I go about troubleshooting/solving this issue ?

also: you need to upgrade to 2.3 on ubuntu 18.04 asap, your version of bbb AND your version of ubuntu are EOL

sorry, the letsencrypt issue is currently the most common problem ;-)

there seem to be an issue with your redis DB, do you have IPv6 enabled without actually working? that causes issues ...

I tried the suggested solution in your post and sadly did not help.

But I think there is a misunderstanding: I did upgrade all servers to 18.04 and BBB 2.3 since I hoped that would resolve the errors, however it did not.
I just wanted to point out that the server was running fine and then - about a month ago- without any changes to the server suddenly it wasn't working correctly anymore.

I did some further testing and the problems are a lot weirder than I thought. If I connect multiple devices within our internal network everything seems to work fine. As soon as I add one or two outside parties The videos suddenly begin to be choppy or straight up stop working, additionaly some people get 1007 or 1020 errors.

I am really confused wat is happening here.

The server is a fresh install of bigbluebutton the only thing I copied over was the greenlight db. But I  think since the room is actually started and people are technically able to cennect we can rule out greenlight as the cause of the problems right ?

I think ipv6 is enabled yes, can you elaborate on what you mean by not actually working and how I could check it ?

correction I didn't copy only the greenlight db but the whole folder to keep user accounts but that seems to have worked fine.
If thats a possible cause for the problems we are encountering, it would be no problem to set up a second vm with a fresh install first thing tomorrow to rule that out as a possible source.

If it helps, litterlay all I did on the server after installing ubuntu 18.04 was
wget -qO- https://ubuntu.bigbluebutton.org/bbb-install.sh | bash -s -- -a -v bionic-23 -s my.bigbluebutton.server.com -e m...@email.de -g

and then followed the instructions from here:

Do you run a coturn server?  If your corporate firewalls made a change to block some UDP ports, the need for a coturn may be needed to route media over tcp.

no we are not running a coturn server. I requested a new VM to try and set one up but it will take a few days.
Anyways it was working fine before so it seems reasonable that it should still work the servers are also not behind a nat but all have public ip4 adresses.

If you look in /opt/freeswitch/log/freeswitch.log and the console of a browser in failing client you should be able to see the SDP with the IPS and PORTs being exchanged to see whats exactly happening,

 

Also,  are your users running VPNs, on their computers,  its possible the the vpn routing is causing some issues.

 

Since it did work, and just broke all of a sudden…   its most like some networking issue coming from the clients trying to connect if I has to guess.

 

Try looking at UDP, to make sure…

 

That covers the TCP/IP ports. Next, we need to test that UDP connections in the range 16384-32768 are forwarded as well. On your BigBlueButton server, run the following netcat command to listen for incoming data via UDP on port 17000 (here, we’re picking a port in the range 16384-32768).

$ netcat -u -l 17000

Again, on a computer outside the firewall, replace EXTERNAL_HOST_NAME with the hostname of your firewall and run the command

$ netcat -u EXTERNAL_HOST_NAME 17000

Type ‘test2’ into the terminal and press ENTER. You should see the word ‘test2’ appear on the terminal of the BigBlueButton server, as in

$ netcat -u -l 17000

test2

As before, it the above test fails, double-check the settings of the firewall to ensure its properly fording UDP packets in the range 16384-32768 and test again.

the problem has been resolved as it seems: I just heard back from one of the network guys. Apparently a few weeks back a new security rule had been implemented which blocked udp connections but only if there were too many udp requests happening as far as I understand it. That would explain why I had no problem establishing a udp connection using netcat but still people werent able to connect.
So it seems your assumption of it being a network eror was correct. Everything seems to work fine again now.

I have the same problem: An suddenly occuring 1007 failure ;( on a running BigBlueButton Server 2.3.12 (2531)

I did the here described test successfully but in about:webrtc I see two "ICE status failed" lines with the external ip-address of the bbb server. Shouldn't I see the turn server IP-Address there?

bbb-conf --check doesn't show an error, an stunclient check is succesfull as well:

stunclient --mode full --localport 30000 myturn.mydomain.de 3478

Binding test: success

Local address: external IP:30000

Mapped address: external IP:30000

Behavior test: success

Nat behavior: Direct Mapping

Filtering test: success

Nat filtering: Endpoint Independent Filtering

Any hint for debugging is highly welcome
