We are setting up an online lesson site where we will have multiple private instruction sessions via video conferencing while also running 6 group virtual classrooms using BBB. It seems like all the hosting companies pricing would be too high as we are going to need a year to develop history with actual usage. So we would like to look into self hosting maybe where we get our own server or shared. I know there are several great options. I have seen names like Amazon EC2 (Firewall), or Digital Ocean, Scaleway, Google Compute Engine (no firewall). But I am wondering what might be the better way to go considering our need for both group and private lessons that are membership based.

All of these are good, and there are many more companies that can offer you dedicated servers at a decent price.

Just make sure whatever server you pick meets the minimum requirements for BigBlueButton as outlined here:

We've seen cases where someone provisions a digital ocean server with 2 CPU cores (the minimum needed for BigBlueButton is 4) and then not have a good experience.  We want you to have a good experience with BigBlueButton :-).

Regards,... Fred

I have been using a bare metal server from Hetzner for about 50€ / month which was a RAM monster and never ever used the ressources.

I now switched to Amazon EC2 with Elastic IP and installed on a c5.2xlarge box (8core, 16GB Ram) and it works very well. A session with the html5 client with a webinar setup (1 webcam, 1 microphone active) with about 50 participants will not consume more than 15% of the CPU cores so there are much more ressources.

After calculating the cost for that EC2 box, I can run it for about 0,40$ per hour.

If your courses are not running 24/7, this is a very economic solution and you will find all the information you need in the BBB docs to set this up.

Worth a try!

Thanks for these suggestions! We are looking into each of them.

One more quick question. So if we go with a service like Google Cloud for hosting for the BBB do you recommend we also move our site and host there as well. We are seeing a big slow down and problems developing at dreamhost?

It might simplify management of the different servers if they were under the same umbrella. From a technical perspective, BBB will work fine with the front-end and BBB on different hosting providers. I'm also not sure what the cost difference would be between the two providers.

Either option would work, it's really just preference and cost.
