Once a screen is selected, the presentation area in BBB keeps showing the initial content of the shared screen..
In order to update the changes for bbb atendees' eyes, the presenter must unshare and share again.

Step to reproduce:
  • Open a ppt and go to a given slide
  • Share that application
  • Look at bbb screen : it shows the current slide
  • Change the slide
  • Look at bbb  : it stiks to the first slide
This used to work correcly before BBB 2.2
Interestingly, the mouse pointer is perfectly shared, while it did'nt before

Is there any parameter to look at, or is this a known / possibly new issue?

Thanks
Jean

Hi Jean,

Do you have two two monitors?  Can you try it twice, each with the powerpoint window on a different monitor and let us know if there is any difference.

Hi Fred,

I noticed this issue last Saturday during a meeting with 4 partcipants.
We could'nt see the presenter slides moving, so he proceeded by un-sharing / re-sharing each time he changed the slides.
I tried again today on my single computer, with exactly the same phenomenon.

This sounds a lot like another issue reported about a shared Excel window not updating when a cell is changed. https://groups.google.com/d/msg/bigbluebutton-dev/34SphncjKEw/EdX99Hv5AQAJ and https://groups.google.com/d/msg/bigbluebutton-dev/7wd10BtTqC8/KIEholqJAgAJ. I don't have Microsoft Office so I can't try to reproduce myself unfortunately.

What browser (with version) and OS were you on?
Also, did you happen to record that session (or could you try to do so)? I'd be interested to know
if the recording is displaying properly or if it's freezing too.

I made some more ,checks
Using Chrome for presenter
- sharing application window works when scrolling a pdf document, it fails with any Microsoft app : Word, Excel, Powerpoint Outlook. It also fails with chrome browser when changing the tab
- sharing the whole screen works in any case.

Using FF
- seemingly the same issue
- but sharing is challenging, it keeps resetting the screen share authorization and is extremely slow.

Using Edge
- does not work at all

Did a quick research, it was a known issue on Chrome. It has been fixed on M74, which is beta right now.
Should be fixed on Chrome 74.

This dos not seem only a Chrome problem. FF and Chrome have exactly the same behaviour when sharing a ppt : one need to toggle the powerpoint window->full screen or back to sync current and displayed slide, the presentaiton mode shows a static messy window.
Interestingly, Edge works perfectly in any situation

Hi Fred,

I tested at https://test.bigbluebutton.org  - I see the exact same behaviour
- Powerpoint current slide only sync when toggling ppt app window/full screen or back
- Selecting Presenbtation mode application shows  actually the bbb screen at the time I selected the app window

I am on Windows 10

Hi Jean,

Do you have two monitors?  Also, what versions of Windows and PowerPoint are you using?  If you try sharing another windows application, such as notepad, do the updates work?

Hi Fred,
I use latest windows 10 and MS Office 365 versions.

Notepad works, but no PPT nor Word or Outlook
Non-MS applications generally work. (pdf, Filezilla...)

It behaves the same in FF and Chrome
However, while sharing takes seconds in Chrome to display the selected app, FF or Edge take about a minute.

Hi Jean,

I think there is an issue with sharing some Microsoft applications as windows using WebRTC screen sharing.  I recall reading about this a few weeks ago (will post a follow-up when I find the link).

Does fullscreen sharing work when you share Word or Powerpoint?

The cause and a fix is out of our control. The browsers handle the screen capture and something in Microsoft Office applications is causing them issues.

If Google has finally fixed the bug then that is very good news.

Hello,

I am still experiencing issues with screen sharing not working well for some participants.
It regularly happens that unlucky participants have to refresh their  screen in order to see the changes of the shared  screen.

Is this a known bug, or common issue for certain desktop configuraitons (browser, versions, OS..)

Thanks for help

We're using the browser for screen sharing (specifically the WebRTC libraries), so there is some dependencies on the browser and bandwidth.

Do you see any pattern among these participants?

Hi Fred,

I am asking the participants, but regarding bandwith, our server does not fit the BBB requirements (unguaranted 100 Mb/s instead of 1GB) though the actual server I/O traffic remains below a few MB durig the sessions.

Hi Fred,

I don't see any commonalities among these incidents.
Our patform is still unable to get confidence from the users. I am looking for moving to a serious server / fresh clean install, testing Jitsi-meet that seems running flawlessly at Zodiac Aerospace, or abandonning a private solution for hosting meetings.

Thanks for your great care and support
Jean

Check if you organization qualifies for G Suite for Education.(it's free)

Google Meet (g suite for education plan) offers:

- unlimited number of meetings

- up to 100 participants per session

- screen sharing (window, full screen), chrome tab sharing.

There are features in development that will basically turn it into zoom (Hand raise in meeting, breakout rooms, more meeting moderation controls, digital whiteboarding, polling),

Hi Jean,

If screen sharing works for some and not others, you'll need to narrow down the issue to see if there is a pattern of browsers / OS that work/don't work.  You can also use our demo server at

They likely have a firewall in place as well. You can try having them whitelist your BigBlueButton server as well to take the firewall out of the equation.
