Shared notes module

Hi guys,

We would like to try the sharedNotes branch. Is it already working (in an experimental way)?

Is there any recomendations on how to build and deploy it? Or it's just enable the new module on config.xml, build bigbluebutton-client and bigbluebutton-apps?

Hi Felipe,

It is working, but needs more work. It's a bit of work to set up. To run it, you will also need to run the backend for it:

And deploy this jsp page to tomcat:

Now, the problem with the module is that it polls the server twice a second to keep synched. So the work that needs to be finished is converting this to user RTMP instead.

I'll probably complete this in the next couple weeks. It's not the highest priority, but it's something I'm interested in finishing soon.

As part of this work, I'm creating an RTMP bridge on the backend, to connect the live notes server to bbb-apps. You should be able to then use this bridge to write other server side modules that can talk to bbb-apps. The idea is to allow people to build plugins on the server, the same way they can do it on the client now. I'll post more info on this in the coming days.

If you run into problems running the shared notes, let me know.

Hi Denis,

We're very interested to start using this module, and I've tried to set up the environment without success.

I've started the notes server, deployed the notes.jsp, compiled the client and apps, and enabled the shared notes on config.xml. But when I try to join the conference, it hangs on "Attempting to reconnect", and I get some errors running bbb-conf --debug (attached). If you could help me on this, I would appreciate that.

Also, I'm available to do the development that is needed to put this module in production.

I succeeded to make it work, but only after starting the redis server.

Could you please confirm that it's a requirement?

Also, is there any plan for this module? I mean, in terms of functional requisites. I have only found this issue, which doesn't explain the module in terms of functionalities.

We've put to run a BigBlueButton version with the shared notes module enabled on http://mconfdev.inf.ufrgs.br, and we will be looking for requisites of our project to enhance it. If you have any ideas, please write back.

Hi Felipe,

There's definitely interest in our part in incorporating this into
BigBlueButton core. There are three modules that we've got listed in
our road map

- polling
- shared notes
- synchronized video playback

Testing this module on http://mconfdev.inf.ufrgs.br is great and I
encourage other members in the community to try it and provide
feedback to Felipe and his team.
