We invite everyone to install try and test out the latest builds of BigBlueButton 0.81-dev.

To install 0.81-dev on a new server, or upgrade a (non-production) 0.80 server to 0.81-dev, see

  https://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/081InstallationUbuntu

To setup a development environment for 0.81-dev,

   https://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/081DevelopingBigBlueButton

If you don't have a server available to install BigBlueButton 0.81-dev, you can try the latest version at our server:

   http://dev081.bigbluebutton.org/

Over the past two months we’ve been largely polishing BigBlueButton 0.81-dev, trying to find every bug that would be visible before the beta.  So far, we’ve closed 135 issues (bug fixes and enhancements) in this release, which represents almost eleven months of design, development, and testing.

For an overview of what’s coming in 0.81, see

  https://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/ReleaseNotes

We’ve got work left on documentation and smaller issues before we reach beta (see draft release notes to links of remaining issues).

Until then, we  invite you to give 0.81-dev a try.  We have only one request: find bugs.

If you think you’ve found one, take a quick search though the issue tracker to see if it’s already recorded.  If not, post a follow-up message to this thread with enough information to reproduce.

Regards,… Fred

Hi Fred,

I have installed 0.81-dev and I am able to run it. When I am running:
> sudo bbb-conf -c
I am getting the following:
** Potential problems described below **

# You have an older version of FreeSWITCH installed.  To upgrade
# enter the following commands
#
#   sudo apt-get remove bbb-freeswitch
#   sudo apt-get install bigbluebutton

I have followed the instructions (remove and install) but the "potential problem" is still there!

Regards,

Moshez

Hi Moshez,

Did you upgrade from 0.80 or is this a new install of 0.81-dev?

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred,
I had the same problem when doing upgrade, tried it twice just to make sure;) Also the old listeners window showed
up. Other than that everything worked well.

The instructions for a new install of 0.81-dev or upgrade from 0.80 to 0.81-dev is only for 64-bit servers.  It says this in the instructions, but I want to emphasize it here (and I should have emphasized this in the original announcement).

For greater clarity: these instructions do not apply to a 32-bit install of BigBlueButton 0.80, such as the BigBlueButton VM.  We'll have the 32-bit packaging ready before the final release of 0.81.

Can you confirm your server is 64-bit.  (If it was 32-bit, let me know and we'll help restore it to 0.80 if you need).

Regards,.. Fred

Hello Fred,
If you are asking me then the first one was a 32-bit that is why i tried on a second server;), and it does say this very clearly, only for 64-bit os the second time was on a 64-bit os and I still got this:

# You have an older version of FreeSWITCH installed.  To upgrade
# enter the following commands
#
#   sudo apt-get remove bbb-freeswitch
#   sudo apt-get install bigbluebutton

Also did a clean install and everything went well with that, even if the network monitoring module did not load in here. Have not really had time to look at  it since I installed it.

We do not need to change back to 0.8 was just playing around last night with a VPS:)
Thanks all the same,
David

Hi Fred,

I just figured out that I was using a 32 bit VPS.
The functionality of the installation looks fine and I was able to run it.
The reason that I commented about the Freeswitch server issue was due to the fact that after compiling the client and running it the server closed connection while loading the BigBlueButton.swf.

Best Regards,

Hi Gigo,

> kick users

Make the following change to config.xml

                <module name="UsersModule" url="http://10.0.3.86/client/UsersModule.swf?v="
                        uri="rtmp://10.0.3.86/bigbluebutton"
                        allowKickUser="true"
                />

> and users sometime have their microphone icon missing in media

If there is no microphone in the User's list, it means the user has not joined the voice conference.   They need to click the headset icon to join and accept the Flash dialog to request access to their microphone.

Regards,... Fred

Can you have the user clear their cache and rejoin the session ... just to make sure it's not a caching issue.

also is there a way to get the lock (microphone) back?

In the current build, only the audio for viewers can be locked by a moderator.  Moderators can't lock the audio for other moderators, but we're thinking of enabling the lock icon again for moderators.  In some sessions there can be more than one moderator, and it would be good to lock their audio to muted/unmuted.

We're still finishing the development of 0.81-dev; we'll revisit the lock icons for all.

Hi Fred!

I've successfully installed 0.81-dev on another server (still running 0.8 on my main one), everything working as it should. Just one question: the delay for the webcam is signifcantly larger on 0.81 than in 0.8. I'm doing tests only in my LAN, and while users on 0.8 server have almost no delay on video, when the same users log in 0.81 server they start seeing 1.5 sec+ delays. Of course its more noteceable because we're testing using 3 laptops side by side, but I still wonder if that's how its gonna be or if maybe its something in my installation.

I know we're not even in beta yet, don't wanna be a pita, I was just wondering that!

i can also confirm that there is longer delays with 81, next meeting we will use the networkmonitor to try and get a beeter andle on what it has for ping times vs real ping commands.
also had freeswitch crash real hard lastnight, will test more, but after 3 hours in one meeting a 9th user joyened and all audo cut out, bbb-conf --clean just got stuck wating for freeswitch to start

just fyi / feedback

also the intelligence of the webcam dock seems like it has a lot of bugs (ill take screenshots next time) , clicking on a cam separates it but its not really any bigger, and even full screening the browser + full screening the webcam doc is not (apering) to giving us as much room for the videos (lots of wasted space).
the auto switch for webcams is nifty but users mostly dident like it because for that meeting it was too jumpy (as in lots of short conversations from members) perhaps if it was a option box to the client or maybe in the layouts.xml?

i can also confirm that there is longer delays with 81

The h264 video codec is supported by Flash, and it's (currently) enabled by default in BigBlueButton 0.81-dev.  The overhead of encoding to h.264 increased the video delay.

You can test on your server by changing the 'enableH264' parameter in config.xml to true or false.

                <module name="VideoconfModule" url="http://10.0.3.230/client/VideoconfModule.swf?v="
                        uri="rtmp://10.0.3.230/video"
                    ...
                        enableH264 = "true"
                />

also had freeswitch crash real hard lastnight, will test more

Good to know.  That's the first reported crash for FreeSWITCH for 0.81-dev.  If you see it again, please post.  If you can provide steps to reproduce, even better.

I've disabled H264 and can confirm the delay is now gone.

is there any benefit from using H264?

Hi Bruno,

The amount of bandwidth needed for video is less the half.  You can test this with running a bandwidth monitoring tool, such as bmon, on your server.

Share a video with h264 true/false and you can see the difference.  Note, do a

  sudo bbb-conf --restart

between tests to ensure your client will receive the modified config.xml.

Hi Gigo,

>  as usseres sometimes the microphone icon is missing in media

OK, I just saw this for the first time in one of our test sessions.  It happened on a laptop connected to a wireless network.  I walked over to the desktop computer, logged into the desktop, and everything looked fine.

Can you recall if the folks who joined but didn't have an icon were on wireless or hard-wired connection?  This might be a problem due to latency.

Regards,... Fred

on my computer connected to the lan off the bbb server, it will sometimes do it (1 out of 6-8 trys), also disconnecting and reconnecting audio seems to clear it up %40 of the time, atlest that's what im seeing in testing.

Hi Jakir,

There is no BigBlueButton 0.81-dev VM available yet.

Right now, we're working on getting to beta with the 64-bit packages.  During beta, we'll update the 32-bit packages as well to 0.81-beta and build a 32-bit BigBlueButton VM for 0.81-beta.

Hi Giuseppe,

Thanks for giving us (temporary) remote access to your server.  The problem was in virtual networking setup.  In short, if you use a hostname instead of IP address for configuring the BigBlueButton server it will work.
