I looked all over, but didn't see where there might be a setting to save Shared Notes. Had a few complaints from instructors who put stuff there thinking it would be saved in the recording. Admittedly, I never tested that, and no one has ever asked about that before. So is there a setting, or is that just not something it currently can do?

Thanks!
Shawn

I think the only option right now is the option to export in the client.

Hi Shawn,

So that you never loose the shared notes, you can also install

  sudo apt-get install bbb-playback-notes

to have the last state of the shared notes appear as a separate recording called 'notes'.  The format of the notes recording is a PDF file.

Regards,... Fred

H Fred,

so between  bbb-playback
-podcast
-screenshare
-notes

Are there any other little gems there for us to look at?

Regards,
Phill.

Hi Fred,

I installed bbb-playback-notes. But when I tried to open the note after the recording is published it failed to open. I also downloaded the pdf file directly from my server under this folder /var/bigbluebutton/published/notes/ and found that the pdf file was broken and couldn't be opened. Any idea why?

Thanks.

Hi Richard,

A few questions to narrow down the problem.  These are taken from

1. What version of BigBlueButton are you installing/running?
2. Did you get any errors during the install?
4. What installation method did you follow?
5. Did the problem appear after initial install, after an upgrade, or after running BigBlueButton for a while?
6. Did you make any changes to BigBlueButton outside of using bbb-conf or the bbb-install.sh script?
7. Are you running BigBlueButton within a development environment?

Check here for the latest version of 2.2

If your not running the latest version, recommend upgrading first.

Regards,... Fred

I just tried in latest build, working fine.

I did have to do  “service nginx reload” after installing the package to load the added notes nginx configs.

Hi Fred,

I only installed bbb a few days ago, let me reply the list of questions:

1. I'm running BigBlueButton Server 2.2.0-rc-5 (1691).
2. The installation was successful.
3. I followed the step-by-step instruction, and installed greenlight following the Customize instruction. Then I installed bbb-replay-notes following this thread.
4. The problem is noticed for the first time since installation, since today we recorded a session with shared notes in it.
5. I changed the default client to HTML, changed the default presentation and welcome message, changed the title of the HTML client, and customized greenlight's interface all following the instructions.
6. I'm running in a production server.

And I did a bbb-conf --check, here is the output:

Hello Richard,

What do you mean by the PDF is borken? Does the file have the PDF header? Does it show some weird characters? Or it does not show at all?

Thanks,
Ghazi

Hello Ghazi,

Thanks for the reply. When I tried to open the pdf in Chrome it showed an error "Failed to load pdf document". I downloaded the files from the server and I found that all of the pdf files are the same size which is 128 bytes. Then I tried to open the files with Adobe Acrobat Reader, it threw an error "Adobe Reader could not open ‘notes.pdf’ because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn’t correctly decoded)."

I guess there must be something wrong with the exporting shared notes to pdf files on the server side.

Best regards,
Richard

If you edit the pdf file :

you have :

This export is not enabled at this Etherpad instance. Set the path to Abiword or SOffice in settings.json to enable this feature

I juste fix the issue :

edit  /usr/share/etherpad-lite/settings.json

looking for
"soffice": null,

replace by
"soffice": "/usr/bin/soffice",

reboot.

it's work !

Thanks! Yes, it worked for me too.

BTW, rebooting is a KEY step. Weeks ago I edited the json file without rebooting, and it didn't work. I kind of gave up on this. Until yesterday I did a reboot after upgrading BBB to fix another bug, then I noticed the notes were recorded and correctly processed.

So, if anybody else has this issue, do remember to do a reboot after editing /usr/share/etherpad-lite/settings.json.
sudo reboot now

solved by restarting bbb 2 times...., no reboot needed.
