Hi Everyone,

I see that BBB has been tested to run on VMware:

But I do not see any instructions on how to install BBB on my own Virtualization platform which is Proxmox (Well known Debian platform). I tried the regular installation for Ubuntu (My VM is 10.04 template) and it never asked me for MySQL password and it asked me to install some GRUB stuff and was asking if I want to change it. Finally it failed.

I would appreciate it if you weigh in if you have got this working in Proxmox or similar VM machines.

My guess is that the .vmdk is only good for VMware which I don't use and only do XEN or the Debian virtualization.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

The Ubuntu packages for BigBlueButton have seen a lot of testing.
However, we've not done any testing on a Debian distribution, so we're
not surprised there were problems with the install.

Packaging is a binary effort: it either works or not ... there is no
middle ground. We know there are other distributions the people use,
most notably CentOS, but, as has been stated before, it's a quality
vs. quantity decision. We choose quality.

The VMware build of BigBlueButton, of course, will work well within
any environment that supports it.

Regards,...Fred

Thanks for the feedback.

But I am using an Ubuntu 10.04 template. I thought it's the same as the Ubuntu 10.04 installed from .iso minus the KVM part and being only a container.

Hmm ... checking out http://www.proxmox.com/products/proxmox-ve.

We've not tested BigBlueButton under this environment ... may take a
shot at testing it in the next iteration ... if it's a stock 10.04 it
should work.

Maybe your guess is right and it's not stock.

Actually my bad. I got Ubuntu 10.10 template thinking it would be even better :-)

I am going to try this on Ubuntu 10.04 template from here and report back:

Bruce

Actually it fails on Template 10.04 as well with message coming up as before right after command "sudo apt-get install bbb-voice-voice-conference":

*************************************************
The following Linux command line was extracted from /etc/default/grub or the `kopt' parameter in GRUB Legacy's menu.lst.  Please verify that it is correct, and modify it if necessary.

  │ Linux command line:                                                                                                                                  │

OK
***********************************************

I tried FreeSwitch method as well but that fails at "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freeswitch-drivers/freeswitch-nightly-drivers"

Not recognizing add-apt-repository as a command.

Hi
I have set up proxmox on Debian and used Ubuntu 10.04 template to install BBB 0.71. Install went ok but I was not able to launch bbb. This may be a simple error or lack of knowledge on my part as I'm not an expert. I have set up bbb before successfully.  I am working with a local school to develop a dedicated server for distance learning. I can give access to this server if that helps.
Thanks to everyone for their great work.
Regards
Gerry

Hi Gerry,

If you can give us (temporary) root access, we'll take a quick look
into the server. Just e-mail me directly.

Also, since this is really a setup issue, can you post any follow-up
messages to bigbluebutton-setup.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Gerry,

Can you please let me know where you got your Ubuntu template? (the link) and also if you followed the exact instructions from here to do the setup?

P.S. How do you know it installed correctly? did you not see any Errors at the end? and what do these two commands return:

sudo bbb-conf --clean
sudo bbb-conf --check

Thanks

Just as a note, I noticed that Proxmox also allows vmdk when trying to create a KVM but I haven't got the chance to test the vmdk yet. I did get BBB running in KVM mode with published install instructions. However, Freeswitch method yielded no audio and Asterisk one was with audio.
