Hi everyone,

Has anyone already tried adding more Chinese fonts to a BigBlueButton server to assist pdf2swf in rendering documents with Chinese fonts.

Regards,.. Fred

The best free Chinese font is Google's DroidSansfallback, you can install it by "sudo apt-get install fonts-droid".
If it cannot work, you may copy Microsoft's Chinese fonts into Ubuntu /usr/share/fonts/chinesefonts, and execute sudo fc-cache -f -v The most frequently used Chinese font is SimSun.ttf & SimHei.ttf & msyh.ttf.

BTW: I joined this group just for answering your question :-)

Hi,

Thanks for the response -- I tried these fonts on a test server

you can install it by "sudo apt-get install fonts-droid".

Hmmm ... tried that but still got the missing characters.  Unfortunately, copying the Microsoft Chinese font is not an option as it would require a separate license.  We are looking for a solution based on open source fonts.

Regards,.. Fred

I think it probably because of the file were not encoded in pdf2swf way. I copied the file content and save it to another pdf file with Mac OS Pages, it works. I have droid font installed.

Hi Fanfree,

Thanks for the feedback.  I just tried your steps on an installation of BigBlueButton 1.1-beta server but the document doesn't convert.  Doing a google for

  pdf2swf chinese

showed this link

which showed promise.  If anyone is familiar with using Chinese fonts, we'd be interested if you could get a sample PDF document, such as

to convert with pdf2swf.

Hi,

Thanks for testing -- we see that as well.  Normally, a PDF has the fonts embedded, and when you open the file in Acrobat Reader, for example, on Windows or Mac OS X and print to PDF, the resulting PDF has embedded the fonts.

It appears the original PDF file does not have the fonts embedded and the reader must reference the system fonts.

We are still hoping others who are familiar with configuring a Ubuntu server to use Chinese fonts -- or more specifically configuring the server so pdf2swf can find the Chinese fonts -- so the original document displays properly in the BigBlueButton client.

Regards,... Fred
