Troubles with recordings after upgrading to Beta-21

Hi,

After upgrading our server to BigBlueButton beta-21 most of our recordings can't be played again.

We have a lot of recordings (over 9,000) made by the use of Moodle as frontend to BigBlueButton, but after the upgrade we can see the recordings listed in Moodle, but after clicking on the presentation button, the play interface starts to load but never ends the loading with the flashing BigBlueButton logo phase.

I have tried running bbb-conf --setip but the trouble continues.

In the server I can see that the files are all in the /var/bigbluebutton/published/presentation/<meeting id folder>  and that all are owned by bigbluebutton:bigbluebutton.

Unfortunately, we have setup daily cron to erase raw files older than 14 days, so we can't rebuilt those recordings:

Hi German,

We just released BigBlueButton 2.2-beta-22 (a formal announcement will soon follow).  We fixed an issue that prevented recordings that did not have any screen share video from playing.

Can you try updating your installation -- the recordings should start playing again.

I have the same issue, but I have updated from BBB2.2Beta21 to BBB2.2Beta22 using apt-get update and apt=get upgrade but the issue is persisting. The following is from bbb-conf --debug:

It is trying to get information from a nonexistent directory, any help pls?

Hi Luke,

It's a bug that we'll fix in the next update.  You can remove these error messages now by deleting the this block of lines

  https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/blob/master/bigbluebutton-config/bin/bbb-conf#L1720

that checks for a non-existent SERVLET_LOGS directory (because tomcat7 is not installed, which is not needed in BigBlueButton 2.2).

I used the install.sh script for the update to Beta-22 and everything worked out of the box, except for Greenlight, but after a reboot of the server and following the start procedure again it started again without any issue.

We've pushed and update to fix the output from `bbb-conf --debug` so it properly detects if the above directory exists.  You can pull the update to beta-22 and then try running the `bbb-conf --debug` command again.

As an aside, many of the messages output by `bbb-conf --debug`, are innocuous or false-positives and can be ignored.  The developers use this command to look for unexpected messages in the log file when working on the BigBlueButton code base.

From the error, it seems that it is trying to get data from the wrong folder:

Hi Luke,

Can you do a quick test of a new recording on your server and let us know if it plays back with out flashing.

For your existing recordings, I think there is some caching going on -- try opening the existing recordings in incognito mode in the browser.

The recording playback doesn't know which files exist for a meeting so it requests webcams first and if they can't be found then it falls back to audio. It does the same for the deskshare video, but there's no fallback needed for that.

I have created a new recording that was processed and published successfully and was able to playback the recording as well.

I have tested an existing recording that has the issue, but unfortunately the BBB logo flashes and never loads the recording.

The existing recording never loads even though the BBB version was upgraded to the latest Beta 22.

Hi All,

In addition to the previous post, I have tried to move another recording to the published/presentation directory but the same issue occurred (meaning that only the BBB logo flashing and recording never loads).

I have tried to republish and rebuild the recording, convinced that the rebuild would not work since the RAW fils do not exist but gave it a try.

This is pretty strange - the issue is that your processed recording
files are missing the deskshare.xml file that 2.0 recordings are
supposed to have.

I'm guessing that some of these recordings originally made on a server
version older than 2.0? If so, a workaround is to edit the metadata.xml
file in the published recording directory and change the version in the
playback URL from

playback/presentation/2.0/playback.html

to

playback/presentation/0.9.0/playback.html

and that should fix the recording loading. I don't know how it would
have gotten set to 2.0 in the first place, tho…

I have also made a PR:
https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/pull/8219
which should allow your recordings to load. It's still a mystery why
the deskshare.xml file is missing, but this PR should at least make the
recordings playable for you and anyone else who hits the issue.

Note that there *are* some differences in the 0.9.0 vs 2.0 playback
formats regarding whiteboard drawings - if you see issues with the
whiteboard then you might still have to change the playback version
used in the metadata.xml

Thanks for the feedback, the majority of the recordings are working but a few are still giving me problems when trying to play them.

I have tried the following recording both on 0.9.0 and 2.0 but recording does not play. The PR was done only on 2.0/writing.js, I do not know if this has to be done on 0.9.0/writings.js as well.

This means that the web server doesn't have permission to either read
the webcams file, or enter the directory containing the webcams file.

It should be fixable by running the following command on your server:

sudo chmod -R go+Xr /var/bigbluebutton/published/presentation/ba58a0291e7eff8d89ba688399085186a9bfc21e-1552306425306

Let us know how that goes.
