We also have the same issue on all our versions tested in 2.2b5 - 2.2b17 range.

I'm working on some improvements to the video profiles and the way that the webcam preview modal functions. I'm hopeful that it will solve a lot of issues related to it.

I'm removing the resolution component of the profiles and relying only on bitrate to control the quality. This allows us to no longer need to scan the profiles to see if the device matches. I'm also surfacing the errors to the user so if there's a problem with the device they will know.

I'm hopeful that it will get in, but no guarantees of when.

I'm also facing the same camera issue in many Android mobiles. By default it's working fine for Back camera in many devices and in the same device, if I switch to front camera, we are facing http://i.prntscr.com/v4_elYa2T5imQgyiwvtf-g.png this error.
Any suggestions to fix it up?

HI Deeps,

We're getting close to updating https://test.bigbluebutton.org/ with some improvements to webcam selection.  We'll update this thread when we have something for you to test.

Regards,... Fred

Ally and Deeps,

Could you guys try sharing on demo.bigbluebutton.org. A build was just put on there that has the improvements to the video preview modal.

One of our testers took a video of the latest test.

Thanks for the video. It's a weird one for sure. The only time I've seen that is when Firefox is open and my webcam driver crashes. Firefox will return a stream to the client, but the stream won't work. The only thing I could do is to improve the detection before enabling the button to start sharing. It can't fix the broken device though.

Do other browsers have the same difficulties?

We tested Chrome on the same mac without issues.

On Firefox, after accepting permission, the small light appears at the top of the macbook screen next to the camera, but the stream never shows.
I can try to get more console logs. I had two mac laptops with Firefox have the same issue.

The users of these laptops regularly have other browsers open and/or conduct google hangouts or use other software (not at the same time). I do not know if that has implications, but that can be expected from your average user. Especially on Mac, where programs never really "close" when you x (top right) out the window.

The best I could do is try and detect a broken video stream and put a message for the user. I've noticed that Firefox doesn't handle being open for long periods of time very well. When it's been open for awhile it starts to have very weird issues and they all clear up after a restart of the browser. There's nothing that client could do to rectify the problem though because it's in core Firefox code.
