First of all, I want to thank you very much for building a very useful application for conferences.
I've successfully installed and use BBB recently for about 2 weeks. Yesterday, our group successfully protected scheme of work of using BBB for conference between departments and Asterisk for VoIP. Now, we are on the second step of building system "Pilot step".

At this step, we have to install BBB, Asterisk (using FreePBX admin) on the same server (to reduce the investment and waste of hardware). The problem is recent versions of BBB use FreeSWITCH as default and we didn't successfully switch between FreeWITCH and Asterisk inside the VM running BBB with FreeSWITCH turned on.

So, please give me some advices about this.
1. Are there any problems using Asterisk with BigBlueButton?
2. Is it posible to use Asterisk within a BBB server as a SIP gate and client using 3CXPhone to make calls together?

Hi Hưng,

The best approach is to keep using FreeSWITCH, but forward your calls from Asterisk to FreeSWITCH.  See

In previous version of BigBlueButton, we would switch between Asterisk and FreeSWITCH, but in 0.8 we've focused on using FreeSWITCH.  See

Hưng,

Freeswitch and asterisk should run on same server, you will need to
make sure they are setup on different ports for listening to sip...
freeswitch sets a unique port for both external and internal
profiles, you need to make sure these don't overlap with asterisk...

Stephen

Dear Stephen,
Thank you for the solution of setup both FreeSWITCH and Asterisk on the same server. According to the thread, this is exactly what I want to know. But when I first time installed BBB, I've gotten a suggestion not to install both FreeSWITCH and Asterisk on the same server https://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/InstallationUbuntu#2._Install_a_Voice_Conference_Server. So, would you help me explain this and do you have a suggestion of how to install both component without conflict?

Dear Mr Fred,
Thank you very much for your suggestion. I would want to follow your demand to keep using FreeSWITCH, but according to the link you gave me http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/FAQ#How_do_I_forward_calls_from_my_Asterisk_server_to_FreeSWITCH_in, I found out that we would have 2 servers. This is a big problem. Perhaps we would have only 1 server for all our purpose of building conference and VoIP system.
Is there a solution of how to setup both Asterisk and FreeWITCH on the same server without conflict please?

Hưng,

I assumed you already were using FREEPBX and asterisk and had that
installed on a server and were familiar with its configuration etc.

Don't install the version of asterisk on bbb site, your looking at
the old .71a installation instructions.

You want to follow the .8 BBB installation which also installs
freeswitch, then you well need to modify either asterisk or
freeswitch, so sip ports don't conflict. for example 5060 might be
used by both etc.

If your not familiar with asterisk configurations i would not attempt
this. Suggest getting a standard working BBB server running standalone
on dedicated server working first, then step into adding the freepbx/
asterisk.

Stephen
