Hello,

Our platform shkolata.eu  is hosted on a bare metal server at the moment.
Our Big blue button is integrated through "BigBlueButtonBN Activity Module for Moodle" (https://github.com/blindsidenetworks/moodle-mod_bigbluebuttonbn/) and not fully installed on our server.
We have noticed the server is "m034.rna1.blindsidenetworks.com", so I suppose all audio stream is going through Canada and then back to Bulgaria ?  We are planning to migrate and install Big blue button on a virtual machine. Can you tell me is it ok BigBlueButton to be installed on a virtual server and what kind of problems we might encounter? Because in the documentaion for the installation is recommended BigBlueButton to be installed on a bare metal server, because  BigBlueButton uses FreeSWITCH for processing of incoming audio packets and FreeSWITCH works best in a non-virtualized environment.

We are making also recordings of all the lessons in the classroom and need space for them. We are planning to organize a big business conference in our BigBlueButton classroom in September as well so if we migrate on a virtual machine what requirements do we need to have to offer a good quality service?

Best regards,
Elena Terzieva

Hi Elena,

have a read of https://docs.bigbluebutton.org/2.2/install.html  This advises bare metal requirements and also that of an Amazon EC2 cloud instance. I run my instance on a KVM virtualistaion with the specification as per the bare metal requirements. The more students logged on / sharing cameras etc. etc. The more heavily the server will be pushed. From previous discussions you can stress test and see at what point the audio and or video starts to struggle. Using a tool like top or htop will allow you to monitor the load on the server and point to any potential bottle necks. Do also note that the suggested bandwidth is now a minimum of 250 Mb/s (it used to be 100 Mb/s).

Regards,
Phill.
