We are pleased to announce 2.3-alpha7, the latest release to BigBluebutton 2.3-dev.

This release of BigBlueButton 2.3 includes multiple bug fixes and several enhancements. Several significant configuration (setup) changes were made (described in the release notes).

Big thanks to comminuty members @amguirado73 , @schrd, @basisbit, @jibon57, @cod3r0k, @hiroshisuga, @maths22 and others! Thank you to all who tested previous alpha's and reported issues encountered!

The full release notes for 2.3-alpha7 are here

Or, better yet, grab a Ubuntu 18.04 64-bit server and install the latest version yourself (it will take only a few minutes):

As always, we welcome feedback on this latest update.
Anton

Hi everyone,

Recommend installing 2.3-alpha7 on a new Ubuntu 18.04 server.

We're working on an issue that appears after upgrading from 2.3-apha6 that can sometimes cause a 404 error when launching the client.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred,

There has been an issue with this (.../html5client/STATS_HELP_URL).

Can you please take a look at it?

Updated bbb-install.sh to update defaultHTML5ClientUrl and defaultGuestWaitURL to correct values.

The upgrades to 2.3-alpha7 should now work with bbb-install.sh without needing to edit bigbluebutton.properties.

As shown in the release notes, this version has

Split Meteor roles backend-frontend revisit to support larger meetings #11317

enabled by default.  We are interested to hear from others who try out 2.3-alpha7 (in non-production environments).

Hi Anton and Fred,
I was able to update from 2.3-alpha5 to 2.3-alpha7 without a problem and have noticed the following things (and confirmed points 2-4 on test23.bigbluebutton.org), thank you and the other developers once again. I have noticed the following:
- the parameter setNumberOfHTML5Processes has to be deleted altogether, as you have integrated it, as you pointed out here.
- in /usr/share/meteor/bundle/systemd_start.sh users suggested in a pull request to set the RAM of NodeJS to allow 4096 MB, in alpha7 it is set to 2048 by default. Is this suggestion held back for a later release or only meant for 2.2.x?
- in Firefox one cannot use the tool Text to add text - once you pull the rectangle, it does not produce the usual window to add text, works fine in Chrome & Safari, tested on Windows 10 and MacOS Big Sur.
- on iPad/Safari 14.3 & 14.4 users cannot set their status - is what I thought from Alpha5 onwards, but actually the Window appears above the whiteboard as soon as you have a few users in the room (see attached screenshot).
- on iPad/Safari 14.3 & 14.4 one can only start writing on the whiteboard on the right 2/3s of the board. One can draw right across it, but not start writing/drawing on the left half (see attached screenshot).
- minor design issue - a box is not closed at the bottom (room started from NextCloud).

Best wished, John Alistair

Hi Fred,

What is the principle or logic behind the user connection status log?

Hi Fred,

Testing 2.3-alpha7,

On the whiteboard, the text is working on chrome and not working on firefox.
I am using Window OS to access BBB on Ubuntu 18.04.

Hi Anton and Fred,
We noticed that the timestamp in the chat is not processed at all in alpha7 (it is always 01:00) - it was okay in alpha5. Have confirmed at https://test23.bigbluebutton.org

Thank you all for the feedback!

on 2.2.x we have a single bbb-html5 nodejs process handling all events and clients
on 2.3.x we have several (by default at the moment we have 2+2=4 total) bbb-html5 nodejs processes. The load per nodejs process is assumed to be lower (plus a lot of improvements were included). We increased it still from the default 1.5 GB to 2GB per process but 4GB might be unnecessary. This is about to be fixed. In alpha7 we fixed the bottom bar of the welcome message but forgot about the moderator only message. Noticed a few days ago but just created an issue to track it https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/issues/11475 Thanks for reporting!

Most of these (if not all) should be resolved later in the week

Thanks again!

Hi Elias,

what messages does the systemd job for starting Mongod and bbb-html5 contain in the log? That should show what the problem is.
