In 2.2 we removed the ability for moderators to unmute other users. Having an ability like that, while convenient, is a security and privacy issue because someone could mute themselves and step away from their computer to have another conversation with the assumption that they couldn't be listened in on. When I look at other voice conference tools none of them allow for unmuting other users or if you can unmute them then the initial mute only affected your ability to hear them and it wasn't conference wide.

You've been using BigBlueButton for quite some time. Do you need to give your instructors the ability to unmute students, or is it sufficient for them to unmute themselves?

Hi Fred and Chad,

yes i do need this option. unmuting is imperative for help desk, and teacher assistant,

often times new teachers will talk for minutes until they realize they are muted, so the  assistant  can Prevent that.

not able to unmute, will also create problems for teachers of class with small children, and many outer use cases.

BBB have the unique ability to switch to "listen only" when you step away from your computer. also pc microphones have small dynamic range.

actual there is already a 'moderatorUnmute="true"' parameter in the config.xml, 

i very much hope this parameter, can revert this major change and enable teachers to unmute on my servers.

Well put -- we're add this as an enhancement request

Our focus now is to get a build of 2.2-beta out to the community.  I don't have a timeline for the above, but given it was in BigBlueButton 2.0 Flash client, you can expect we'll add it to the HTML5 client.

Thank you very much Fred, very much appreciate it. and all this great system you guy's created.

Still trying to figure out how html5 "mute all users" functions.

Currently in 2.2, when you choose to mute all users, the label changes to:

"turn off meeting mute" and Then freezes,  there is no possibility to 'mute all' again. 

so, i guess, this will be fixed somehow.

Hello all... I suppose the feature should be working like explained below. 

1) Mute All Users : This will mute all participants and also disable the ability to unmute themselves except the moderators.

2) Turn off Meeting Mute : Pressing this again will restore the ability for participants to unmute themselves. 

This works perfectly since we have a "Raise your hand" feature to ask permission to speak during an ongoing lecture. When the teacher finishes her session she can turn off the meeting mute and address the person.

This is a very minimal feature update. And will solve the trailing bug issue too reported on https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/issues/6817
