Hi Everyone,

We are pleased to announce the release of BigBlueButton 2.2 beta-7.

Thanks to members of the community that have been running BigBlueButton 2.2-beta-6 under heavy load and sending us feedback, we were able to isolate and fix a number of issues.

For a summary of what's new, see:

In this update we also added a few new features, such as a recording format for shared notes.  See above link for details.

To install/upgrade to BigBlueButton 2.2-beta-7, see

To try out this latest release, visit

We encourage anyone running earlier builds of BigBlueButton 2.2-beta to upgrade and, most importantly, let us know if you see any issues with this release. We're interested to replicate and fix any bugs you encounter.

Regards,.... Fred

Hi Fred / BBB team,

Thanks for this new release that includes the aforementioned fixes. Will continue to use, test and report problems/issues to the group.
I already upgraded my installation, however, bbb-check still reports that I am in beta6 after a successful upgrade.

when you try to join a breakout room it connects to a local ip address.

Hi Everyone,

Got it -- its an issue with the label still saying 2.2.0-beta6 but all the packages should have updated to beta7.  We'll fix that shortly.

Matteo Tumidei wrote

Can you check the output of

  sudo bbb-conf --check

and see if it gives you any warning messages.  Did breakout rooms work before the upgrade?

Matteo,

Can you also check

  /usr/share/bbb-apps-akka/conf/application.conf

and ensure that the block for

services {
  bbbWebAPI="https://<your_host_name>/bigbluebutton/api"
  sharedSecret="<your_shared_secret>"
}

has <your_host_name> matching the hostname of your BigBlueButton server.   Also, did you run

   sudo bbb-conf --setip <your_host_name>

after upgrade?  See

Fixed.  Can you do a

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and then do

  sudo bbb-conf --check

You should now see

BigBlueButton Server 2.2.0-beta7 (1056)
                    Kernel version: 4.4.0-146-generic
                      Distribution: Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS (64-bit)

bbb-conf check is correct. I had a clean working installation before the upgrade
with breakout rooms working

now it connects to this ip.

services {
  bbbWebAPI="https://<your_host_name>/bigbluebutton/api"
  sharedSecret="<your_shared_secret>"
}

!!!! Got IT
that was the problem. Thank you.

Nice.  You should always run

 sudo bbb-conf --setup <host_name>

after each package update for BigBlueButton.  bbb-conf would then re-assign the hostname for application.conf, see

Double check that the shared secret in the GL env is the same as the one for the BBB server. The demos are definitely working so it's something in GL itself.

Hi Chad,

Where would I check? The new key shows when I issue sudo bbb-cof --secret and. as per the on screen hint, I updated /var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/demo/bbb_api_conf.jsp Are there other places that need updating?

Thanks,

The "env" file could also be named ".env" or something similar, but that's where GreenLight looks for the shared secret for your BBB server.

Hi Chad,

thanks for that, it took a bit of digging as it is in /root/greenlight/env which is not searchable as a '$' user using locate!!  I've updated it and restarted BBB, still getting the 500 Errors.

I think your best bet now is to just check the logs and look for errors http://docs.bigbluebutton.org/install/greenlight-v2.html#if-youre-running-with-docker

Just set up the GL container to test it out. The "docker run" command that the install script uses doesn't map the logs to an external directory so you have to get into the container to see the logs. I was also able to run and create accounts without email verification without issue so my best guess is that it's going to be a configuration issue. I was also running the "master" tag instead of the default "v2" tag to try out the latest stuff.

First list the running docker containers
$ docker ps

Take the GL container name and run the following command to get a terminal
$ docker exec -it <container_name> bash

You should then find the logs in /usr/src/app/log/production.log

Adding the non-root user to the docker group will allow you to run docker commands without sudo. https://techoverflow.net/2017/03/01/solving-docker-permission-denied-while-trying-to-connect-to-the-docker-daemon-socket/

The grep command is missing the full stack trace, but it looks like it's the BigBlueButton secret in the env file. I'm not sure if "bbb-conf --restart" will actually restart the GL container. If you're sure that the BBB secret in ~/greenlight/env matches "bbb-conf --secret" the next step would be to force restart the container. I think running "docker restart <container_name>" should be enough to refresh the env file. If that isn't enough then you'd have to stop the container, remove the container, run the "docker run" command again to recreate the container. Those three commands would be:

docker stop <container_name>
docker rm <conainter_name>
docker run -d -p 5000:80 --restart=unless-stopped -v ~/greenlight/db/production:/usr/src/app/db/production --env-file ~/greenlight/env --name greenlight-v2 bigbluebutton/greenlight:v2

Hi Chad,

That worked!! Had to sudo -i in order to cd to /root so that the docker-run command would not error out with:

docker: open /home/phillw/greenlight/env: no such file or directory.

Thanks for all your help!!

Phill.

We don't have any direct control over the cursor with the WebRTC stream. The browser captures everything and streams it to the server so I'm not sure that there's anything we can do. You could try a different browser, but you'll likely find the same behaviour between Firefox and Chrome.

The fps is chosen by the browser to fit as best it can into the available bit rate of the stream. The server has a configuration for the maximum bit rate that it can accept, but the browser will also lower the quality if it thinks that the local network or computer is having issues. It looks like the server is set to 1.5Mbits/sec max for the screen share stream. You could try increasing the cap on your server.

In /usr/local/bigbluebutton/bbb-webrtc-sfu/config/default.yml look for the following. The "content" sections are the screenshare restrictions and "main" is the webcams.

  VP8:
    tias_main: "300000"
    as_main: "300"
    tias_content: "1500000"
    as_content: "1500"

https://w3c.github.io/mediacapture-screen-share/  looks like cursor control is speced and may eventually work in browsers applying a constraint as they merge to the standard.  getDisplayMedia(), not a fix you can implement as a user, but possible if your technical and want to dig into the code.

What Stephen said is true, but I've been monitoring what
Chromium and FF implement regarding constraints for gDM
and both of them are very far from the spec. Most we can do
right now is specify the media constraints. Not even the allowed
content types (e.g.: window, app, tab) are supported yet.

I'm keeping an active vigil over Chromium and FF release notes, tho,
and when I find interesting constraints added to gDM I'll make sure
to try enabling support for them in the client.

Hi Fred,

Thank you for all your work. I'm having issues with 2.2.9.

The whiteboard pen isn't working properly. It relates to this https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton/issues/9067

I ran these lines from the documentation.

git fetch upstream
git checkout -b my-changes-branch upstream/v2.2.x-release
