Hi Cousins!
I’m going to start posting this info on IG in a few weeks but I figured I should let you know ahead of the general public.
In doing some family research, I discovered our great great grandfather, Papa J (or Joseph Edwardson Brookes (Abuela’s father and Mama’s grandfather)) recorded that his place of birth was St. Kitts in the 1920 US Census taken in the Panama Canal Zone so on this year’s annual mother daughter trip, Mami and I decided to go to St. Kitts.
While there, we found Papa J’s baptismal record which indicates that he was born on December 7, 1877 and the birth records of his 5 siblings as well as the marriage record of his parents (Josiah Edwardson Brookes and Henrietta Phipps). They were married in June 1874 at the Ebenezer Methodist Church in Old Road, St Thomas Parish, Middle Village in St. Kitts. Josiah Edwardson Brookes (our great great great grandfather) was the schoolmaster at the Wesleyan Church in Dieppe Bay.
He (and Papa J (who was also a schoolmaster in St. Lucia) were likely trained at the Mico College in Antigua.
Mico College was a teacher’s college started by the predecesor entity to Mico Charitable Foundation to provide educator and school administration training to schoolmasters of schools set up to educate those emancipated from British enslavement throughout the British Colonies in the West Indies, Seychelles and Mauritius (enslavement was abolished by the British in 1834 and apprenticeship ended in St. Kitts in 1838).
Here’s a picture of Mami and me in front of the church where our great, great, great grandparents were married!
Let me know if you have any questions.
Kira
